I agree we dont have the championships to show, but year in and year out we are consistently one of the better teams in every sport in the league.

Don't we support 6 or 7 sports more than the requirement to be D-1. I'm not advocating cutting sports but the more sports that are supported means the money is spread out even further, even if it isn't a big budget sport.

You do realize ODU finished 6th in the east last year in football, right?

I'm pretty sure ODU sponsors less sports than Southern Miss.

Nope. ODU sponsors 18 sports. Nine each for the men and women. Southern Miss is currently at 16 sports total between the men and women before beach volleyball comes online.

RE: USA Today released athletic finances for 2016-17
Most of you are reading the expense side of the budgets incorrectly...its not always apple to apple. Schools budget things differently.

Some schools list all bond payments under FACILITIES / OVERHEAD and some dont. That can add millions of dollars to that item of the budget. Some schools put that line under the General Fund budget

Same with coaching pay some are listing contract pay only, while some list every cost, pension, insurance, all the extra cost that goes into it. Then COL is higher at school schools and this reflects that.

Scholarships is soft money just a line on two different budgets but no money really changes hands. A line on the AD and General Fund budgets. But again, it cost more at some schools than others....millions more

All of these cost add to part of a budget that really has no affect on game play. ODU has the highest budget $46,181,753 and the avg CUSA budget is $31,749,778. Most of that 14+ million extra is ate up in the way ODU budgets FACILITIES / OVERHEAD and Scholarships.

Below is all CUSA schools listed and sorted by largest budget on expenses

Southern Miss needs to step things up, $ wise.

FAU ticket sales... 2016 = $1.6M, 2017 = $0.9M

Your attendance (for FB at least) went up, I think almost doubled. How the big drop in ticket $s?

Yeah that's seems to create confusion on message boards and social media every year...interpreting dated data as current as well as treating total revenues as operating budgets. But, they are great for identifying trends and outliers over specific periods of time. For some schools like FAU 16/17 fanbase dollars (tix sold and contributions) will have little correlation to 17/18 or the current budget cycle which begins day after tmrw.

USM ranks right up there in ticket sales and contributions...but we have the lowest student fees in C-USA, and receive NO subsidies from the state (which is why numbers sometimes lie)...

OP and MSUcks like it that way, since it means USM cannot be subsidized by the state into a
more productive program, while conversely, the SEC subsidizes the sh!t outta the Black Bears and Bullies.

North Texas spent over $36 million on athletics in 2017. With the recent hike in our student fee, I believe we will be spending around $40 million this year.

Ticket sales will tell one anything he needs to know about a program.

Yep, fan generated revenue tells you everything you need to know about the overall health of an athletic program. You can be subsidized out the ass and still be in debt and not winning titles.

Might not give you the total picture of the health of AD but that statement has some truth to it. I would love to see what each CUSA school reeled in as self generated revenue i.e. ticket sales, sponsorships, donations etc. I don't know if anyone compiles that data but that would be very helpful.

Certainly not everything but if fans and donors are not actively investing and an AD is falsely propped up by state money and high student fees, that’s not a good long term situation. Jmho

You can look at it that way but FIU has a budget that is more healthy than Marshall's. Even with low ticket sales and over 21 million in student fees....

FIU has tons of room to grow

On July 1st FIU's AD has 21 million dollars in the bank and those students paying that money are not burdened as much as the Marshall students that contribute over 6 million to the Marshall budget.

each FIU student is paying $381 a year in student fees (based off 55,000)
each Marshall student is paying $471 a year in student fees (based off 13,300)

If FIU added another $90 to their student fees and caught up with Marshall. That adds right at 5 million more a year to the FIU budget. That is 1.2x the amount Marshall is getting on tickets sold.

FIU is expecting enrollment numbers to reach 58,000 (3000 more than today) by 2020. That 3000 increase adds another 1.1 million to their AD budget

Below came from Google:

The 2018 undergraduate tuition & fees of Florida International University are $6,556 for Florida residents

According to https://www.marshall.edu/tuition/ it cost a Marshall student $4,064 Per Semester Tuition for a Resident of WV. $8128 a year for a Resident of WV.

In the last 7 years Marshall has been in the mid to high 3 million mark on dollars off tickets sold. So basically Marshall has been stable but without any major growth. In those years Marshall had a run of 10, 13 and 10 wins and a conference championship... with very little growth on tickets sold .

This has nothing to do with me being a Western fan. Hell I pointed out the problems Western was going to have, well over 2 years ago. I knew Western (like most of our schools) are a state cut or a enrollment decrease away from cutting millions from our budget.

This is just a look at how student fees are the most stable stream of income in most schools budget. How a school without much tickets sold but a large enrollment is actually the stable school when it comes to a budget and growth

I can appreciate all that, but Marshall will never prop up its athletic budget on the backs of the students as some schools do. Is that suicide, maybe, but that’s their goal and I think things would have to be pretty dire to change that stance. Of course it would help all our schools if we had a better media package but that ship has sailed and ain’t coming back.
