I would, and I'm guessing even Ant would like the hire (or at least, not complain about the hire). So I don't think its worth holding Janish's role in last year's disappointing season against him too much when he was only on the staff for 1 year. This is similar to Bloomgren retaining Vestal. Both Vestal and Janish were retained because their earned their spots with the new head coach, not because they were on the staff the prior season.

This is a good way to look at it. There is certainly no other red flags on Janish that would make me think it was a bad hire (assuming he was not at Rice last year). My only issue with the hire was his association with the mess of a season last year and also had concerns about any holdovers, especially how acrimonious the split between Graham and Rice seems to have been.

Bragga is trying to mend the relationship with Graham by hiring Janish and not Berkman.

Oh stop already! I'm sure his decision not to hire Lance (if that decision has been made) has absolutely nothing to do with Wayne Graham. Note-- if Lance was to come on as an assistant it would be as a volunteer; that's my understanding of his mindset.

As for Ant's corporate world analogy, I'm at a loss what corporation works that way. It certainly has not been my experience that a changing of the guard with an external CEO hire results in a cleaning out of the Executive Suite. In fact, I can't think of one instance where that was the case. It just doesn't happen. Sure, if the departing CEO had one or two right-hand men/women who might have been tangled up in the reason for the transition, then they might be terminated, as well, but not the entire senior team. No company in their right mind with risk such upheaval.

Definitely more than a few. And when you only have 2 right hand men, more often than not, one sees them get replaced. Especially in an antagonistic departure situation.

Anyways, rather than going in circles, I'll follow mrbigs post and look at it from this point forward independent of his affiliation with the previous regime and last season.

By this logic, Rice baseball is a below, but close to, the 37% average retention after the hiring of an outside CEO. So how is what Bragga and Rice did by retaining Paul not OK?

Having said that, again this is baseball, not a corporate board room. Bragga by all indications hired the people he thought were the best for their posistions.

The term “Volunteer Assistant” is a bit of a misnomer, as they are paid and have the same schedule as a normal assistant. It’s similar in that way to a GA or Quality control guy on a football staff.

If Lance were to come on as THE “Volunteer Assistant,” it’s effectively as good as hiring him as an actual assistant, only that he can’t recruit off-campus.

If Walt was suggesting that Lance would be part-time, I think Bragg would hire a true volunteer assistant in addition to him.

??? A volunteer assistant in baseball is NOT a paid position. Mitch Gaspard (formerly head coach at Alabama) just signed as volunteer assistant at Georgia. And they don't quite have the same schedule as the two Assistant Coaches, as they're not involved in off-campus recruiting and are not usually involved in developing scouting reports.

They are paid, just in unconventional ways... See the post by “Prepster” in this thread: https://community.hsbaseballweb.com/topi...ng-and-pay

He's been to the CWS and knows what it's like to win it all. That experience should not be forgotten.

Pooh pooh all you want. If Rice Athletics acted more like a corporation than a banana republic, they probably wouldn't be in the disaster state they are now.

Damn, so close to a "Zimbabwe" reference from Antarius, but not quite. The day is young, though, so I'll hold out hope.

Failure on two counts...... didnt get an airline or airplane analogy either. You would suck at being a deposition attorney..... 03-wink

As a specific example, Coach Shepperd was paid using camp revenue and through lessons with younger kids (often times immediately after our practice ended, he would stay late and host a practice or lessons).

The baseball camps have always funded the volunteer position.

True about the camps. Also true about the lessons. The volunteer coaches typically give lessons to young baseball players in blocks of time in the evenings.

Paul is back in action this weekend as part of the Blue Grass World Series being played in Louisville. Check out his team roster, but Johnny Bench is the coach. Former Astros Roy Oswalt and Chris Burke are also on the team.
