Edit: Kendall Rogers reported it and likes the hire. I’ll trust that.

If this is the case, he spent 1 season at LaTech.

Interesting. Certainly, LaTech pitching this past year was among the best in the conference: 3.48 ERA, .253 BAA, a very impressive 2.8 K:BB ratio, with just 176 BBs vs. 488 Ks in 532 IP.

And he certainly sounds like a top recruiter, BUT almost all of that has been within the state of Louisiana. No one on the current staff has any current ties to Texas and Houston high schools.

As I recall, a significant portion of LA Tech’s roster is from Texas. And McNeese isn’t exactly far across the border.

A quick check of Mcneese’s roster shows that about 2/5 of their roster is from Texas. Barton would’ve recruited a good many of those.

Barton attended the Surefire Conference in Texas in January and was impressive, as expected. Really bright young mind — @LATechBSB ranked 25th nationally in Team ERA in 2018. #Rice @RiceBaseball

I like the hire.

I've seen (in the business world, anyways) that sometimes people get too caught up in "checking all the boxes", and end up with somebody mediocre...and ignoring candidates that have truly excellent skills on a few dimensions who could have turned out better.

This guy looks like he's a great recruiter and has had good results as a pitching coach. Sounds like what we need.

I doubt that. Barton only joined the La Tech staff in July 2017.

Hence why I said McNeese

No question he has built a quality rep as a recruiter, BUT you're recruiting a VERY different type of student-athlete at Rice than you're doing at either McNeese State or LaTech or Lafayette-Monroe....to put it mildly.

Well given that Mcneese’s baseball APR is higher than ours it sounds like at the very least he was recruiting guys who stayed in school.

Qualities I look for in hiring people:

1. Ethical
2. Smart
3. Will to win - competitive spirit
4. At a minimum, has a baseline level of competence in the subject matter. Doesn't have to be a subject matter expert immediately, but needs the tools to get there.
5. Extrovert who will network relentlessly
6. Maintains a standard of excellence

Lack of Texas ties is not a deal breaker. Lack of recruiting experience at a prestigious school is not a deal breaker.

My mistake. I shouldn't respond late in the evening.

Here's an article on the new coaching staff posted by The Roost...

http://attheroost.com/2018/07/03/matt-br...ul-janish/

I'm guessing the volunteer assistant will be a relatively recent Rice player who's looking to get into coaching; someone like JC Reeves.

The sub-headline says, "After the hiring of Matt Bragga as their new head coach, Rice baseball continues to flush out their coaching staff." I am pretty sure he meant "flesh out".

Are sportswriters more likely than other writers to botch idioms, or does it just seem that way?

Well he’s not a sportswriter by trade. He’s an engineer who decided to write a Rice sports blog.

Irregardless of that... (I mean "irrespective," and "regardless," but they frequently appear to like to combine them into a word I believe is made up.) Not sure that quality isn't shared by a majority of journalists these days. Leading from behind.

And here's the Riceowls.com official announcement of Barton and Janish, with quotes from both, as well as Bragga...

An odd decision, to say the least. Governance changes on a regime typically do best with a full purge of the senior incumbents.

Bless your heart.

...at least you managed to avoid Zimbabwe references, but still a weak post.

Cute deflection but Care to make a counter point? Senior leadership rarely survives in a successful management changeover. especially a performance based changeover. Do we really want to keep doing what we did last year?

I get that Rice likes to keep blazing the unconventional wisdom trail, but it's not working. Maybe the others have it right?

You do understand that it's Bragga's decision to keep Janish, not Rice policy, right?

Are you arguing that keeping Janish is a disastrous mistake?
