I do agree with most of your premise however I don’t think Oklahoma or Oregon or NC State or St. John’s or anyone of that ilk has just said, “hey let’s go to DeKalb, they have a new video board and maybe let’s get them in our conference now.”

Kind of feels like my wife buying a $3 dollar throw pillow and then three weeks later spending $3,500 on a couch and loveseat to match that pillow and then asks me to have my friends over to sit on it.

I’m saying I don’t believe we would ever be invited to a power5 conference but if we were the convo would be good enough.

Can you please name one Power 5 basketball facility worst than our Convo?
Illinois State is even better than the Convo.

Northwestern’s arena has been completely re-built for this year, so you can scratch that one going forward.

Yes but Northwestern was allowed for many years to play in that arena

I don’t believe if NIU’S convo with its new video screen was at Northwestern two years ago, I don’t believe they would be doing major renovations to it. I believe it would be good enough as a member of the big10

How much Kool-Aid do you drink? No. 1, NIU is not going to the Big 12, the big10, or anywhere else based on a basketball arena. Comparing the Convo and Cameron Indoor Arena is so absurd, it casts a doubt on whether you know the difference between five pounds and 50 pounds. Sold-out crazed fans making it impossible to hear and capable of intimidating opponents compared to the Convo and the mediocrity that is Monty-ball is absolutely insane. Clearly you were never around to experience Evans Field House because you would know there hasn't been one single event in the Convo that could measure up to those days. The best attendance in the Convo during Monty's tenure is less than EFH average crowds. The Convo is exactly what it is, a facility designed and built by companies that didn't truly know what they were doing, from the running track that didn't meet NCAA standards to poor acoustics, to a slope that makes seats seldom even made available feel like you'd better off watching at home, to sub-standard lighting, to a roof or HVAC system that can cause postponement of a basketball game. The one thing needed to make a real increase in attendance is a new coach capable of competing in the MAC and putting a team on the court that values heart, hustle and chemistry. Monty's "record" at home is a cornerstone built largely on scheduling for victories. Sadly, the longer Monty stays, the greater the odds your yearly prediction for success eventually comes happens....what do they say, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then. By the way, how come you didn't cite the increase in football attendance following the installation of those electronic ribbons at Huskie Stadium?

RE: New video board for Convo
57, wth! are you talking about? I clearly said NIU was never getting invited to a power5 conference. I’m simply stating that I believe a school any school in a power5 conference could play in that conference if their arena was the convo once the new scoreboard is installed. a 10,000 seat 15 year old arena would be good enough. Many on here were preaching NIU to the big12 that was never going to happen but if it did the point is the Huskies wouldn’t have been held back by the convo. This has nothing to do with Monty!

What dekalb’s saying is if BXII got drunk and admitted NIU tomorrow and magically sold out BB games, it’d be an acceptable P5 arena. That’s true. The Convo has the bones to pass off as one. But the likes of Redbird Arena, Carver Arena, SIU Arena, Resch Center, Chaifetz Arena, Worthen Arena, etc could reach as one too so it’s not unique in that regard.

Along with winning which NIU does a lot at home will help attendance. It will also be a big positive thing with the players. Football is the no. 1 priority but you cannot just neglect everything else. NIU now has a power5 conference level basketball arena. Great job! Sean Frazier!

I respectfully disagree. I agree that you can't neglect everything else but thinking this is going to provide a better experience and get people to come out doesn't add up for me. When built the convo was the premier basketball arena in the MAC and it never mattered or had good attendance. With the exception of Bill Cosby (oops) I never saw it full. The environment at the old, antiquated, run down Chick Evans field house was a great atmosphere for hoops. In the early 90s the woman's bball team was ranked and the men's team made the tournament twice. That is what will bring people to the arena, not fancy scoreboards. People will sit in a dump to watch great exciting basketball. While this may be money well spent to help get better recruits it will do nothing for attendance until those kids start winning.

There are many G5 arena's that wouldn't pass muster in the "P5", lets be grateful we have a structure that could likely operate at that level if need be. Excited to see the new video boars and scoreboard.

Chairs are very uncomfortable and location is not conducive for students , but it's a great great facility otherwise

The Convo is absolutely beautiful. Only thing I’d change is the court. Initially hated the track but have warmed up to it being unique and conducive to exercise and walking around.

My guess is that the chairs are the next thing to get replaced.

Any chance they'd have a double-wide seat section for those of us with double-wide arses?

I dont notice the track as much either but for me I think part of it is because it's rare I go to a game where upper level seats are pushed out. Really hate the track when it divides upper and lower bowl. If you are in the lower parts of the upper level seats and close to that track, just makes you feel too divorced from the game.
