Munz is gone. Who's the guy now? Munz was pretty good at keeping us up to date. It's kinda been crickets since he left.

I hear the new guy is “negative” and plans on calling us a “mid-major.”

Munz was up-to-date and informative. However, he seemed like way more of a “rah rah” guy than a beat writer should be. I was always put off by how spirited his defense of Berry was a few years ago when people wanted him fired. And I thought the show he did with the baseball players was too close to the program for his role. To me, that was the kind of work that media relations should do to promote the program, not a beat writer who is supposed to give us an unbiased report.

The way I’ve heard it from beat writers is your relationship with coaches should not be outright hostile, but uneasy, at best. If they don’t occasionally get pissed off at you, you’re doing something wrong. Maybe those takes were a little “old school.”

Obviously, I don’t know what his relationships with coaches were like. And another place liked his work enough to hire him. It was just a little more sunshine pumping than I would have liked.

Do you not get enough of that from Patty Magee? We need more negativity like we need a hole in the head.

I liked Munz and thought he did a good job. For me, living out of MS, he was a great go to for USM info.

Probably one of the reasons he was on top of the releases when they were sent out. As long as he writes positively and isn't "digging up" info the athletic dept prefers to not get out he'll get the interviews and info needed. Had he asked the tough questions or wrote about the negatives he would've been cut off or shorted on the info in my opinion

I don't necessarily need more negativity..... but if that's a part of unbiased reporting and holding the athletic department accountable, I'm all for it.

I don't read Patty Magee. I have no reason to read a MS Gulf Coast newspaper, and I found him to be a mediocre beat writer when he was at the HA--not because he was negative but just not insightful or informative. I can't recall anything particularly negative that he wrote. I can't really recall anything he wrote.

I see what you're saying and we are getting to a point where coaches act like such sensitive little snowflakes that they can't tolerate much. And what you're saying is absolutely incentive for beat writers to always try to stay on the coach's good side.

But there's a balance in there. That's why I was saying that I don't expect a beat writer to be combative to a point in which the coach won't talk to them. But they need to be willing to dig a little and criticize when appropriate. Otherwise, they are taking on the role of someone in the athletics department.

Munzly was more of a shill for the athletic department than some actually on the Southern payroll. I've never even heard of this guy and there's more info in one article related to Joker and the gang than Munz' total body of work for the crayola.
