RE: Who are the Three Best Athletics to Ever Attend Your School
For Southern Miss, I'd say:
1. Brett Farve [NFL HOF]
2. Ray Guy [NFL HOF]
3. Tori Bowie [Olympic gold medalist]

It was a tough call between Tori and Brian Dozier [MLB]

Good ones.

How about Fred Hansen, Olympic Gold medalist and world record holder in the pole vault?

Thor? Twice ran for a TD, passed for a TD, caught a TD in the same game. Once played seven positions in a game?

Dicky Maegle, the tacklee in the bench tackle? 265 yards on 11 carries in the Cotton Bowl against Alabama?

And we haven't even mentioned the players selected #1 in the NFL and MLB drafts.

Or the guy who pitched a perfect game in the majors.

You could throw Mardy Scales in there somewhere too. 100 M NCAA Champion and anchored a sick 4x100 relay team.

Reggie Upshaw is up there as well, though he only played basketball at MT. He was recruited for football not only by MT, but $ec schools, and IIRC, he was state high school high jump champion out of high school.

There is no doubt what so ever that Brian Oldfield was the best. Larger than life talent and personality, probably 40 years ahead of his time.

For Southern Miss.
Reggie Collier - the first college QB to run and pass for 1000 yds in a season.
Did it in the time when QB's did not run. Bear Bryant said he was the best athlete he had ever played against.

Torrie Bowie - Won 3 medals in the 2016 Olympics in track, gold, silver, and bronze.

Ray Guy - the best punter ever in college and the NFL, including the Hall of Fame honor. He also an unbelievable athlete in college om that he was an outstanding safety in football and a great baseball player too. I also watched him play basketball and he could have started on the basketball team too.

Honorable mention - Adalius Thomas, DE/LB. The only player in the NFL to ever play all 11 positions. Yes, I said all 11 including the defensive line and defensive back positions. The first time he lined up at CB the WR laughed at him. When the ball was snapped Thomas blocked him off the field and into the bench. The WR didn't laugh when he lined up for the next play. lol

Calvin Brock was a heavyweight boxer with a degree in Finance from Charlotte. Observer called him the “boxing banker”. Was on the 2000 Olympic team and was 31-2 as a pro with a title fight loss to one of the Klitscko’s.
He hurt his eye in one his last fights and the surgery was unsuccesful so he lost most of his vision in one of his eyes.

I believe he is in real estate in Charlotte now.

He definantly deserves consideration

Mean Joe! What a player! I was a huge Steeler fan during those glory years when Green and Bradshaw were winning those 4 super bowls, so I've been a fan of Mean Joe Green for a long time.

I can't say that I liked the '70's Steelers much at all.

But I did like that Coke commercial.

I don't know if it is legitimate. Yes, she played B-ball for FAU, but that's not what she's known for. She's a speedskater. We do not have speedskating at FAU (I do not even know if speed skating is an NCAA-sanctioned sport)

some relatively unknown stats/facts about how great Ray Guy was while at USM. This was from the year he was inducted in the NFL Hall of Fame but should still accurate with the 4 or so years completed since the release

- Guy was selected with the 22nd pick by the Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders in the first round of the 1973 NFL draft, the first punter ever to be chosen in that round.
- In his first collegiate game as a Golden Eagle, Guy recorded a 77-yard punt, and he led the NCAA in punting in 1972 with a 46.2 average
- Guy concluded his three-year Southern Miss career with a 44.7 yard punting average and recorded three punts of over 70 yards, including a school record 93-yarder.
- Guy kicked a school-record 61-yard field goal in a snowstorm in Utah, which set an NCAA record at the time
- Guy also saw playing time as a defensive back at Southern Miss, notching 18 career interceptions. He holds the school record for most interceptions in a season (8) and is second in career interceptions (18)
- Guy was also a pitcher for the Southern Miss baseball team. He recorded a no-hitter and averaged 1.5 strikeouts per inning. He also recorded 16 strikeouts in one game
- Guy recorded 14 complete games in 31 career starts and was drafted by Major League Baseball for three-straight years.

No doubt, he is the greatest punter to have ever played the game. That other stuff is pretty amazing, but his ability as a punter was unbelievable. As a Steelers fan during Guy's NFL career, I had to pull against him and his Raiders, but I always appreciated the great talent that he was.

I think it counts since it's "best athletes to attend your school" without limiting it to post-college success in the sport they played in college.

With that being the case, you could throw in LeShawn Merritt for ODU except he never played sports there as he already had signed with an agent. So that's dodgier.

RE: Who are the Three Best Athletics to Ever Attend Your School
Rice has a lot of really old-time athletes who are all long gone and mostly forgotten. King Hill was an incredible athlete in his time - he was the #1 pick in the 1958 NFL Draft and had a long career in football, both on the field and off the field. He also was an accomplished golfer. Some people might still remember his name.

The one no one knows anymore is Fred Wolcott, who was a track and field star way back in the late 1930's/early 1940's. He was a world record holder in the hurdles and a probable multi-gold medal winner had the 1940 Olympics not been cancelled because of World War II.

Both of them might also be in discussion among our top-ever athletes, in addition to the folks others have mentioned (although my top 3 if we're talking recent professional athletes would be Lance Berkman, Ricky Pierce and Tommy Kramer).
