Reddit thread on NIUs choice to go independent back in the 80s

That was a really good write-up. Though I wonder if the canceled Kent St game and subsequent “we’ll make an exception this one time but you must play all 9 games from now on” was much of a factor in NIU self-evicting.

The MAC was crazy in the 80s! Ohio and Kent bitching about NIU. NIU bitching about Kent. Everyone bitching about EMU and then booting them only for the NCAA to reverse ruling and everyone pretends nothing happened while EMU rejoins. CMU stuck in the middle of the EMU vote and having to abstain.

MAC message boards in the 80s would’ve been wild. Would’ve loved to hear MD’s thoughts back then.

Oh and thank God for Cary Groth. She looks better and better as time goes on.

man that 1989 independent schedule was wild. what a raw deal, going 9-2. Six home games, a fairly tough schedule and no love from polling (I dunno, but I think if West Virginia was Independent and ranked 21, we should have at least had a top 30)

Plus the top three teams were all independents. wild.

Does this guy get a google alert anytime NIU’s mentioned on social media? He literally made a reddit account just to confront NIU fans.

Exactly, and Illinois State will NEVER be FBS unless the MAC took them in.

Poor guy needs a girlfriend.

That's a great article, especially since I about 3 days ago was trying to figure out how long NIU was out of the MAC and why.

Being there 88-93 was a cluster f to say the least. They were the heart of no identity. Felt like nomads. Never knew who we were playing, who in the heck was even in the Big West, different conf. for football and basketball (Mid-Con was fun with UWGB).

That should be a required read for anyone with even a thought of going indy.
