You point to the AFL in the 60s, what about:
AAFC(1946-1949)
AFL(1926)
AFL(1936-1937)
AFL(1940)
AFL-Arena Football(1987-2008)
AF2(2000-2009)
CFL(1965-1969)
FXFL(2014-2015)
IFL(1999-2000)
IPFL(1999-2001)
PSFL(1991)
UFL(2009-2012)
USFL(1983-1985)
WFL(1974-1975)
XFL(2001)
Did those leagues have an "astounding lack entrepreneurial vision" as well?
Most of those leagues had a lack of financial backing and were held together by duct tape and wire. They were nothing but a hope and a prayer. Heck, many of these leagues were on such poor financial terms, they couldn't pay their players' salaries. The WFL had players playing for free half the year. They had teams folding overnight, and moving non stop.
While I agree, the AAF has long odds, they have so many things that many of those leagues above did not have. Namely financial backing, solid television deals with CBS, and big time football experience running the show. Look at the names involved in the AAF.
these teams usually have a hard time making it in S.A. there are few big spending corporations located there to draw support from and only a few deep pocket citizens that are willing to spend the big bucks. Half the city is military or civil service and the other half will not provide a steady stream of folks that will pay 2-300$ to take their family to games, so after the novelty wears off so does the necessary income stream. This has happened every time. the city should just go all out for the road runners instead. as an earlier poster said, there are too many teams as it is.
AAF SA has announced that the most expensive tix will come in at $35.00 per. Now there's a lot that can happen between now and when they finally start selling tickets to the public. But if they stick to that, that's very affordable for most.
At Bobcat stadium, I sit on the 45 yd. line, row 17, lower level seats. Good seats that I'm satisfied with. I've already calculated that at their $35.00 rate, a season of AAF would be cheaper for me than a season at Bobcat stadium. It's not a straight apples to apples comparison, as TXST plays 6 home games to the AAF's announced 5. But still, cost shouldn't be an obstacle to most.
You also neglect to calculate that SA, and the I 35 corridor between SA and Austin have grown significantly since that last SA experiment with Spring football, in other words, more potential butts to buy seats.
While many have "joked" over the years about "Cisneros' folly," I.E. The "Build it and they will Come" Dome. I will say that it's a great venue for football. The noise that a crowd can generate inside that place provides a hellofa homefield advantage. I've enjoyed every game that I've attended there.
With the TV contract, the expertise they've got coming in, coupled with an entertaining product that's affordable to most, the AAF has a shot. And if in the end it goes the way of the Wings, Gunslingers, and Riders . . . well, it's what most expected anyway. In the meantime, I'm gonna enjoy the ride.
Well, not really. What they announced was you can get a quality seat, between the 20's, that could be purchased for 35 bucks. They didn't say that this would be the most expensive seat. If it is, how will they make any money at all.
My guess is they will have a decent amount of sideline lower bowl 35 dollar seats, however seats on the 50s or near it will cost 100 bucks or so. Just a guess.
I do agree that the Alamodome is a GREAT venue for catching a game. This league is much better thought out, planned, and financed than 90% of the failed leagues that came before it. You could get some big names to play in it, that for whatever reason, aren't quite on an NFL roster.
Side note, still can't believe the world league put a team at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos at one point in time.
I stand corrected . . Thanks. They are offering "good" side line seats for 35.00. These won't be the least, nor will they be the most expensive. They go on to say that there will be tickets priced for every budget.
Still, sideline seats for 35ish ain't half bad.
The Riders playing at Bobcat stadium occurred (I want to say) in their second year of operation. I actually saw them play up there. The first year they were playing in a high school stadium (SAISD) affectionately known as the rock pile. The old San Antonio Wings also played at Alamo Stadium (Rock Pile).
If memory serves, part of that deal (to play at Bobcat stadium) included some "upgrades" paid for by the World League.
