Breaking news: Supreme Court rules for states in online sales tax case
This is huge. Amazon and Ebay shoppers just took a hit...

Quote:WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court says states can force online shoppers to pay sales tax.

The 5-4 ruling Thursday is a win for states, who said they were losing out on billions of dollars annually under two decades-old Supreme Court decisions that impacted online sales tax collection.

The high court ruled Thursday to overturn those decisions. They had resulted in some companies not collecting sales tax on every online purchase. The cases the court overturned said that if a business was shipping a product to a state where it didn't have a physical presence such as a warehouse or office, it didn't have to collect the state's sales tax. Customers were generally supposed to pay the tax to the state themselves if they don't get charged it, but the vast majority didn't.

BS. Just another reason for the government to go into more debt.

You knew this was coming one day. I just bought an item last week on Amazon that cost $900. The state sales tax saving was nice. No longer. Sucks.

You can bet the states will be on this faster than shite thru a goose.

Any way to squeeze even more blood from the stones better known as taxpayers.

Why cut spending when you can come up with more ways to tax?

I have a tab open to buy a shed from MO and have it shipped to my door. No sales tax on that transaction means it cheaper than buying one from down the street.

Why?

Why should online sales be exempt from sales taxes, giving them a competitive advantage against brick and mortar stores within the state that are paying teh sales tax, plus other taxes that fund the government?

I am definitely going to cancel my Amazon Prime membership with the rise in Amazon Prime membership fees and this ruling.

I think this is the right decision although it kills my large Internet purchases.

That's not the question I am asking, nor the statement I made. I simply enjoy the idea of taxless shopping.

Actually, they shouldn't.......but who likes paying taxes??04-cheers

Unfortunately, a lot of things government does is necessary and has to be paid for. Sure wish there was a way to force them to try and be cost effective.

Why should online retailers be given a competitive advantage over brick and mortar retailers?

They've managed to figure out a better, faster, more efficient way of retailing by offering more goods at cheaper prices purchased from the comfort of your own home and sent right to your house.

THAT'S their competitive advantage. If the brick & mortars can't figure out a way to keep up, they close the doors.

That's how capitalism works.

What they also did was exploit a part of the law that didn't cover taxes and internet sales. Instead of punishing them, we should be praising them and figuring out MORE ways to do that very thing.

RE: Breaking news: Supreme Court rules for states in online sales tax case
I don't know if Tennessee was one of the states that filed this, but it is one of the states that first began collecting sales tax for online purchases.

TN is one of a handful of states that does not have a state income tax. Revenue from sales tax is thus more crucial to its budget.

Frankly, I don't mind paying sales tax because I DON'T want to pay state income tax.

Plus, we get to deduct sales tax from our federal tax return. I don't know if that deduction will remain for 2018. We'll see.
