Bet Larry Brown wouldn't have torn his Achilles in his 2nd practice.

Just kidding. Achilles is a bad injury at any age. Long, tedious recovery.

Especially as we age. Good luck, coach!

Listening to him, he sounds like he could strap'em up if he needed to. Hate to hear about the injury.

I heard him on the radio today and he said two things.

1. Everyone should “slow their roll” on a possible conference championship this year.

2. He’d rather have good people than good BB players on his team.

Number 1 is disheartening. And against what penny has said. What that could mean I dont know but I hope it's not him evaluating our talent and thinking he doesn't see it.

Why is it disheartening?

1- what coach wants to set the bar for year one conference champ or bust? especially for a program that has 3 years in a row not made the NIT

We added a bunch of 100ish freshmen to a middling team that lost 2 contributors. People are going to have to improve dramatically or the freshmen are going to have to come in and contribute above their ratings.

But I don't know if Mitchell is evaluating our talent or trying to set realistic expectations...But if he is evaluating I wonder who he is comparing our guys to...He has been working with some really high level guys and those would be unfair comparisons.

Mitchell is known as a no bs --- tell it like it is guy. That said, I didn't hear anything predicting we wouldn't win the conference. 03-wink

Kobe Bryant was back on the court in 8 months, he tore his on April 13th and was back by December 8th at age 35 but that's Kobe.

As for Sam Mitchell at 54, who knows?

Get well soon, Sam.

Having said that.

This will probably inhibit his ability to get out there and teach guys moves quite a bit.

How does Penny overcome the loss of a coach during practice?

Surely, there is a clause or something that allows for extra help in injury and illness cases.

I'm not expecting the Tigers to win the conference this year. If we have the class I'm hoping for in 2019, I would hope to win it then.

Very weird walked to back door right before i opened this thread to let dog out and did something to my Achilles. Certainly did not tear it just by stepping the way i did, but thought it was weird to strain mine and then to open page and see this thread.

I'd rather have good people than good BB players in my Sunday School class. I want bad ass Joey Dorsey type BB players on my basketball team.

And I'm tired of slowing my roll. Been doing that for 10 years.

RE: Sam Mitchell injured
They way i heard the good people comment is that enjoys the process of developing men. I don't think he avoids a 5 star player who is rough around the edges to take a model 3 star, but that he looks forward to helping players develop the needed character to impact their communities after basketball. The Jones kids came with some baggage that dropped him to the 100's when he used to be a top 30 ranked kid.

I love Sam's enthusiasm. His hesitation is just coach speak. He wanted to wait to see how it comes together and guess what, we all have to wait to see how it comes together. We thought the DeJuan Wagner team would be great but they never made it to the NCAA's and that team had higher rated players.

It's the NBA coach in him coming out, doesn't really mean much. NBA coach average tenure is around 3 years, they are experts at reducing expectations.

It's called tempering your expectations. Memphis fans have a history of setting unrealistic expectations then complaining when the team doesn't meet them.
