It's a good thing the boosters know better than to post a lot of unfounded rumors and innuendo on the internet.

RE: Rice star Blain Padgett died from opioids
From my recent experience, I didn't see a rampant drug problem. Sure, there's a lot of marijuana in places, but I'm pretty sure that's true of almost any college campus these days. I also, and it very well could've just been one of those things you're told as a freshman, thought that Rice was putting a greater emphasis on drug safety since that student disappeared in Panama a few years ago while taking LSD.

You mean Panama City Beach, I think.

Correct. There was another off campus drug related death the same year I believe or the year before. I think before that the last one was 2007 or so...

That would be correct. Knew it had Panama in it somewhere.

The important thing is that the message needs to be consistent. Everyone at Rice needs to have a zero tolerance position when it comes to drugs and drug dealers. It might not make a difference every time, but it can help. Of course, given that one prominent athletic administrator is allowed to proudly display a fictional meth dealer in his office you can question the commitment of the University to the optics of that campaign.

The opioid crisis is actually statistically “better” in Texas than most other states.

And yet, almost everyone (majority Texans on here), knows somebody affected by it.

I’ve now known four people who have passed from it and none of them came from “bad backgrounds,” were involved in gangs, etc.

Sad, sad stuff.

The tragedy lies, of course, in the nation-wide opiate crisis. It’s impact has effected millions of people in America and is the single most important factor in health care today. It’s cost is staggering. And it has the potential to wreak havoc on every family in this country.
If you haven’t read it already, I recommend Dreamland. By Sam Quinones. Required reading for my surgery residents. A chilling, well written book about how we got to this point.

A crisis at our shores now. T&P to Padgett family.

Does that really say up to 143 opioid prescriptions per 100 people?

Wow. Not only is somebody getting my share, but lots of somebodies are medicated around the clock 365.

Of course one is my 70 year old sister, who is on prescribed Oxy. She gets 4 prescriptions a year, each for 90 days.

I don't have much respect for the pill mill pain management doctors in this business.

I understand where you're coming from, but I was at a local biotech event a few months back and met a youngish MD who had left his practice and returned to business school because of his disgust at insurance companies who consistently denied coverage for safer (and more expensive) pain management medications, which affected a significant portion of his patients, in favor of the dirt cheap opioids. It's just one data point, but I suspect there are a lot of his peers who feel stuck between a rock and a hard place.

This statement by your youngish acquaintance tells me that he never actually came around to a true understanding of pain and opioid addiction at all. (and this unfortunately is the rule, rather than the exception)

I'm a doctor with thousands of patients, and I have less than a handful on chronic opioids for non-cancer pain....and these few are on an extremely short leash. I am ashamed to say that this crisis falls squarely on doctors' shoulders to a substantial degree.
And yes, as OO said, there are alot of "pill-mill" quacks out there who are making tons of money off addiction. And I have zero respect for them too.

If you think that graphic above is shocking, try this one: Americans consume 99% of the world's supply of hydrocodone.
And, 25 to 40% of opioids prescribed for "chronic pain" (in reality, simply opioid-dependence) have been shown to be diverted directly for sale on the street.

I cant find anything on this other than this one tweet and the website referencing it. Homicide can mean a lot of things, including the usual third party connotations or even going after a dealer for distribution irrespective of intent or malice.

Not a fan of the sensationalist tone of the tweet at all.

Perhaps, considering the sensitive and very intimate and emotional subject matter of this incident ... and considering that it concerns a student-athlete member of our Rice community... the best response to the tweet should be a respectful wait and see.

Some more details: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/ho...281208.php

Quote:The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences ruled Padgett’s death an accident, due to effects of carfentanil, a synthetic opioid, according to the Beaumont Enterprise.

Carfentanil is 10,000 times more potent than morphine and 100 times more potent than fentanyl, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Houston police wouldn’t confirm whether homicide investigators were treating the death as a homicide, but said that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

Just horribly, awfully sad. One young man's life is gone, apparently because of another who ruined his own in the process.

I've got to believe there will be more, if they can get the information. At a minimum, there is probably a compounding pharmacy (or a black market version) that created this abomination of a pill. I'm pretty certain the elephant tranquilizer isn't normally included with the hydrocodone in a normal pharmacy production line.

My colleagues and I have never heard of it either. And, if actually this potent, then I would consider whether this was murder...because nobody would intentionally even TOUCH the stuff...

My colleague is studying recovery from opioid use.

Even smart people do not so smart things.

During the mid to late 70s, the drugs of choice I encountered were alcohol (the overwhelming favorite) and marijuana.

My freshman week was essentially a week-long beer bust.

I matriculated in the Fall of 1972. A buddy of mine in a different college asked me to come with him to an off campus college party during O week. We showed up at the house and found the party in the large back yard, most of which was a giant pool. There were large coolers of beer at each corner of the pool. Immediately upon entering through the gate we were handed beers. This being in the middle of the afternoon we weren’t too thirsty and not used to drinking anyway, so after politely accepting the beverages set them down quietly. We wandered around looking for anyone we might know, or want to know, for about ten minutes. Finding none, we left. Thank God in Heaven for decent friends! We both lived at our parents’ homes in Houston the entire five years we were at Rice. No drinking problems there, and still none. Although I never was real happy with my room mate, a younger brother who caroused every night until around 2AM then came home wanting to turn the lights on in our bedroom and read a magazine. I don’t know why I never put a night light bulb in that overhead fixture.
