Turns out defamation isn't a sound business model. Doesn't tom donate to SPLC? He may need to cut them off, as that money will likely soon end up in the pockets of his political enemies.

He suggested that the $3 million settlement and apology the SPLC gave to Maajid Nawaz and his Quiliam Foundation on Monday would encourage further legal action.

"We haven't filed anything against the SPLC, but I think a number of organizations have been considering filing lawsuits against the SPLC, because they have been doing to a lot of organizations exactly what they did to Maajid Nawaz that's part of the settlement," Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, told PJ Media on Tuesday.

Liberty Counsel filed a lawsuit against the charity navigation organization GuideStar for defamation, after GuideStar adopted the SPLC's "hate group" list. That lawsuit is ongoing.

I agree the SPLC has become a terrible, politically biased organization but there is a very reasonable argument their classification of Nawaz was protected opinion, based on disclosed facts. If they take public information and communicate an opinion of that person's intent, even if it's a terrible opinion (and I have no doubt it's a terrible opinion), how is that defamation? And now a bunch of organizations are coming out of the woodwork to see if they can leverage this settlement into their own? I honestly love seeing the SPLC get its comeuppance but I'm a bit worried about this process.

I'm really wondering why they settled. Worried about discovery maybe?
