Avalanche put out the Flames 4 games to 1 with a 5-1 win in Game 5.
And both in arguably dominating fashion too.
It's hard to argue that fans should pay much attention (or buy many tickets) for regular-season games when having one of the best records in the NHL regular season looks to be about as meaningful as having one of the best records in MLB spring training.

Not the game I was expecting from the Canes tonight. That said, Monday will be like Thunderdome in Raleigh.

Caps play like they did tonight, no one and I mean absolutely no one will beat them this year.... It's possible that only 2 teams higher seeded win in round 1, the Caps and Islanders. And both would play each other next.....
Caps would have home ice thru remainder of playoffs after rd 1 if Boston loses.

Can't believe both Lightning and Flames are gone in first round.
Important game tonight as Knights need to put Sharks away at home in game 6. Go Vegas!

What a game! Vegas had tons of SOG, but in the end it felt the longer SJ held them off, the more momentum was on their side. SJ on a shorthander in 2OT, pulls out the road win. Not looking forward to Game 7, but hope the Knights can get it on Tuesday.

The 3rd #1 seed is eliminated (Nashville).
The 4th #1 seed has a game 7 awaiting them (Washington).
It is possible that all 4 #1 seeds could be eliminated in the 1st round.
The 4 wild card teams have shown up !!
I suspect this has happened before. But I couldn't tell you when.
What a playoffs it has been already and it's only the 1st round !!

Canes show up big and make the series head back to DC for a Game 7. I was able to get to G6. While G4 was on another level, G6 tonight was a top crowd vibe from the Canes playoff games I have been able to attend in person.
Ovie looks frustrated and seems to want to take cheap shots for some reason. The crowd cheering his ejection at the end was EPIC.

Several of the NHLPA players wish to return to the 1 thru 8 seeding instead of the more recent accommodation that has seemed to skew the early playoff results.

Except that 5 of the 8 series would have been exactly the same, including the entire western playoffs and in the east Tampa/Columbus.

Vegas up 3-0 in the 3rd.... did something to a Sharks player .... to where my man was bleeding on the ice and got walked off, the offending Golden Knights player gets tossed along with a 5m PP for the Sharks.... I turn the channel due to them dealing with the injury..... turn back 3-3 SHARKS... and see the go ahead by them to go up 4-3 @ 7 and change.

What !!! The Carolina Hurricanes come back from 0-2 and knock off the Caps in DC in game 7 in the 2nd OT.
Unreal. All 4 Wild Cards knock off the #1s and advance.
Espn tweets:
What a wild first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs:
- Defending champs GONE
- Historically good Lightning GONE
- Avalanche upset top-seeded Flames in 5 games
- THREE Game 7s (2 ending in OT)
Commentators are saying that the Canes just outworked the Caps. Some saying that the Caps were gassed, not in as good a shape as the Canes.
Some are saying if Barry Trotz was still on the bench for the Caps he would have managed the game better.
One tweet: HC "Reirden double shifted his stars early & burned them out." During 30 minutes of OT Caps only got off 6 shots.

The Stanley Cup Caps as "one hit wonders"?
I went to G4 and G6. I can't tell you how electric that atmosphere was.
Caps got caught like the Warriors in talking to the refs instead of playing. They also resulted in cheap shots to make themselves look better. You could see it in Ovie's play and antics.

Stars vs Blues
Avs vs Sharks
Blue Jackets vs Bruins
Canes vs Isles
After round 1, I am making NO PREDICTIONS.

Good for the Canes. I love playoff hockey. Let's go Blues.
Btw, I believe this is the first time in SCP history that both eight seeds advance and all four wild cards advance.

What a wild game, and a heartbreaker. It was a tough cross-check, and SJ did what they had to do, but I agree that it shouldn't have been that severe a penalty to allow the character of the entire game to be altered like that. Hockey is a tough man's game, and aggressiveness is to be expected, especially in a win or go home game 7. In hindsight, a stupid move by Vegas on that face-off, but think refs over-reacted a bit in calling a major and extending the SJ power play like that. They certainly would not have won otherwise.
Will be a very long off-season.

Agree on the Canes. I am rooting for them and Columbus since I'm an Ohio native. You are correct, no division champions advance since the 1967 expansion. Truly an exciting time in NHL playoffs for a wide open field of contenders.

Why was it stupid? It was an aggressive, playoff move that at the absolute worst should have been 2 minutes but you can see in the replays that the refs had no intention of calling anything. It was only after they understood the severity of the injury that it was called at all. They did not over-react a bit.
And of course, today the NHL apologized. Terrible, terrible call.
