Massachusetts Town Went After Company’s ‘Excessive’ Flag Display, Residents Spoke Up
Quote:One Massachusetts business was facing a citation from town officials because its flag display — which was erected to honor veterans on Memorial Day — was “excessive.” Then the company fired back, and the tide turned.
Over the Memorial Day weekend, employees at Laer Realty, located in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, covered the business’ front lawn with 200 American flags “in support of our deceased veterans and all the people who have served,” Jon Crandall, who works at the real estate company, told WBZ-TV earlier this month.
After facing a citation for the decision, the business fired back by adding even more flags — eventually totaling around 700, thanks to the American Legion Riders — and residents came out to support them. Soon after, the town’s leadership changed their minds.
Crandall and Laer Realty CEO Stacey Alcorn appeared on “Fox & Friends,” ultimately resulting in an apology from Town Manager Paul Cohen, according to The Sun. He told Alcorn there would be “no further enforcement action from the town in this matter.”
Cohen apologized to Alcorn and Crandall for any inconvenience the issue might have caused.
The controversy first arose due to a town bylaw prohibiting the stars and stripes from being used for “commercial promotion,” though it should be noted the flags were erected to commemorate Memorial Day and Flag Day.
“Clearly, I don’t think the intent of the bylaw is to be unpatriotic or anti-flag,” the town manager told Alcorn, noting the regulation needs to be revised for clarification.
Nevertheless, the issue was finally settled last week.
“In the end,” Alcorn said on Fox News, “we got what we felt was right.”
