New track facility eats Marching Blazers space
I have information concerning our Marching Blazers. The new track will take up the current rehearsal space for the Marching Blazers. At this time, there is not an alternative for the Band. Intramural fields will not be available until classes begin and are six blocks awat from the music building.

While I’m excited for our track team to be on campus, I am rather aggravated that the band has been left without a suitable alternative to be able to have their preseason camp in which much of the work toward their halftime performance is prepared.

Someone has dropped the ball in regards to taking care of a very important student group.

Something will work out. They will find something. I don’t know why this board posters seem to be against track and field. They are UAB athletes as well.

I’m definitely not against the track team. But why wasn’t something done to take care of the band before they started construction?

My oldest daughter was in the high school band and they didn't have a field to practice on.
They practiced in the parking lot.

They practiced in the parking lot.

There should be a difference in the standards of high school and college bands.

I don’t think some of you understands what it take to move a 250 piece band. Sending them off campus is not a viable solution.

What do you mean by off campus? I know Auburn's band facility isn't walking distance from the practice field.

This is something to "take care of the band." Generations of Marching Blazers will pay for the heroic acts (and endless loop of Rock'n'Roll Part Two) of December 2014.

Fire Ray Watts.

I would guess the football practice field(s) aren't in use 24/7 and may be offered as an option.

To me, the covered practice field would appear a perfect location for marching band practice. Am I missing something?

Nope. It probably would be perfect. The only issues being availability & the offering of it as an option.

I can think of a cherry grove site that would be perfect.

So has anyone actually spoken to the band director about this being an issue?

RE: New track facility eats Marching Blazers space
For those suggesting we use the baseball or softball fields. Do you think their coaches will allow the band to paint field lines on them? That's going to be a no go.

As far as a parking lot, do we have a 80 foot x 50 foot area that can be guaranteed to have no cars at 3-5 30pm. It works in high school because all of the other students leave at 3.

There were issues at times during the soccer season where we couldn't use the band practice facility during the nights of their games. We can't use the quad because it near so many classrooms. The professors complained constantly about drum camp during my tenure (it is during the summer finals) . I can't imagine they'd like us doing that during the entire semester.

This is going to be fun for them.
