Iceland!
Iceland with a population of 300K holds perennial power Argentina and Lionel Messi to a 1-1 tie. There is no sporting event that holds a candle to the World Cup.

On top of their victory over England earlier.

It is just hard for me to get a perspective as to which countries to expect to be good. Senegal is playing Poland right now and handling them fairly easily into the second half. Senegal?

Pappy,
The way you love a good underdog, you will really enjoy the World Cup and international soccer in general. I equate it to the NCAA tournament because anything can happen in the first round then as it gets closer to the semi finals the big boys( France, Germany, Brazil etc usually win out. I have gotten to witness several matches in the UK and the US and it is an excitement like none other when your country is playing.

I will say this, their cheering beats anything I have heard. At any given moment half the stadium is doing a coordinated cheer, and with some of the crowds they have, it is pretty inspiring.

I got to watch the second half of the Iceland upset over England last year, and that was really great drama, whether someone followed soccer at all or not. I know enough to know that England is one of the powerhouses, so it was sort of like Magazine beating the NY Yankees. I kept thinking something was going to mess it up, but Iceland hung in there.

Apparently, Iceland is no fluke. A tie with Argentina, compares favorably to beating England. I find myself pulling for the African teams. Great athletes, but I guess their overall training and coaching is not quite at the European or South American level yet. They are exciting to watch, however.

This World Cup has been particularly rife with surprises so far, as well as exciting games. In cups past, there always was a “feeling out” period where the first matches were a bit boring. Not the case this year!

RE: Iceland!
I was looking at a Biggest World Cup Upsets ranking, and in 1950 Uruguay defeated Brazil in front of 200,000 people. How did they get that many in a stadium?
