RE: OT - Memphis rounds out BB staff

Marcuscan is right that Memphis has a lot of momentum going on right now. They are recruiting at a high level. They have secured a very experienced coaching staff. Furthermore, I read this has been a financial windfall for Memphis... they are projecting an additional $4.5M in ticket and merchandise sales alone.
Frankly I hope Memphis succeeds. Overall it is good for the conference in terms of getting more teams into the tournament (resulting in more money), more exposure during the season, etc. and maybe, it will result in our program "upping its game" as well in terms of recruiting, evaluation of talent, how we conduct our operations, etc.
I hope Penny succeeds at Memphis. A strong Memphis program is great for the conference and makes the Memphis UC games far more interesting. Just from history I am skeptical that he will succeed at the level many seem to be expecting. I think people really under estimate the jump in level he is making as a coach and often seem to think former great player = automatic great coach.... History tells us otherwise in most cases.

It's hard not to be excited about fresh air being pumped into a program... Lord knows our basketball team needs some changes of its own.
Uc basketball is in far better position than the Memphis program throwing a hail Mary with a head coach who never coached at this level. I think drexler at Houston is a more likely result than Memphis back as a top 25 program.
Furthermore, it's not like Coach Cal is exactly an expert coach. He basically rolls the ball out there and let's his talent do the rest. Memphis is going to have a similar strategic advantage. You can win a whole lotta games in CBB on talent, and talent alone. S hit gets real as you ascend in the tourney, but then again, he's got hella coaching experience on staff in the form of Tony Madlock and Sam Mitchell.

I disagree with this. Not a Cal fan... but one of the things he does well is getting the talent to share the ball and agree to play roles. It doesn't always look pretty in the beginning of the season, but he seems to figure out ways to get it dones by February.
