Question South Alabama steals Troy's Pitching Coach
South Alabama relieved former pitching coach Bob Keller of his duties on June 4 and needed to find a new one. Mark Calvi didn't have to look far to find his replacement.

RE: South Alabama steals Troy's Pitching Coach
Phillips is a great guy. He'll be missed at Troy. I knew him when he coached the high school team in town.

He wasn't exactly a coach that blew the doors off at Troy though. I was never impressed with most of the relief pitching that was recruited, or some of the decisions on who was brought in to pitch in relief. There were quite a few games this year where instead of bringing in a hot-shot arm to clinch a game that we were winning, he'd put a relief pitcher that couldn't handle clutch situations (IE: when we were beating Florida State, Coastal Carolina, and Alabama, just to name a few).

Before this 2018 season where Troy had the #1 ERA in the conference, here's how his previous staffs finished in the Sun Belt:

2017 - #5 (4.19 Team ERA)
2016 - #3 (3.79 Team ERA)
2015 - #6 (4.48 Team ERA)
2014 - #7 (4.58 Team ERA)
2013 - #4 (4.23 Team ERA)
2012 - #7 (4.92 Team ERA)

Brad is a class act. He will instantly add respectability to the under achieving staff at SoBama.

If Troy gets the guy they are rumored to be aiming for, the fans here will likely be very pleased.

Let me add some FACTS to this post.

Since Calvi took over:

Jags in Sun Belt Standings:

2013: T-#1
2015: #1
2016: T-#1
2017: #2 (Tourney Champs)

14 Sun Belt Conference Championships
25 NCAA Regional Appearances

Let’s face it. You couldn’t expect anything less from these turkeys. They made similar lame statements when they lost their offensive coordinator to South’s new football coaching staff. These guys hate losing anything to the Jags. Would be comical is they weren’t so pitiful.

If you consider a guy that that had his play-calling duties taken away and who went from OC to Co-OC when Neal Brown arrived a "loss", then by all means...

He was calling the plays when Abilene Christian read us like a book and when we finished with the #108 offense in the nation in 2014. If he wasn't a Troy alum and member of the 1987 Troy DII national title team, he probably would've been let go by Neal Brown.

I think most were opposed to calling it a "steal" or a "poaching". He went to South to rejoin a former teammate, whom he is very good friends with, and a place where he can be more of his own man. He will calling plays at South, he was a Co-OC at Troy, neither of which called plays on Saturdays.

Actually, I am glad that "OC" is gone, he stopped calling the plays when Brown became our HC anyway and we were able to hire an additional coach that way. No doubt, he was partly responsible why Troy underperfomed after Coach Brown left us for Texas Tech and Kentucky (the lost years, 2011-2014).

However, we lost one great coach this year, LB coach Jon Sumrall (former Co-DC at Tulane) who is now LB coach at Ole Miss... he is also a great recruiter.

South's offense will be better with Edenfield.

Troy's offense will be better without him.

Coordinators often take head coaching gigs at lower division schools because they can offer a promotion...

Valid point. I should have used the word Class.

Offense doesn't really seem to be the big detriment of those lost years.

Coach Brown left after the 2009 season, so you should compare these numbers to 2009, 2008 ... I think 2010 was still ok, we still had Jernigan on our team back then. Also, I think we played more top P5 teams during the Tony Franklin/Neal Brown years?

Look deeper than the offensive ppg.

In 2012, Troy had the #65 offense in the nation, the #117 rush offense, and the #119 redzone offense. It was painful to see how many games we lost that year because of the predictable redzone playcalling. You could literally tell whether it was going to be a screen-pass or a run up the middle with a small 5'9" 190 lb running back...

In 2013, Troy had the #54 offense in the nation, and the playcalling near the endzone was SO BAD. Redzone offense was #84 in the nation.

Needless to say, the offense was very frustrating while Edenfield was OC. When Brown started calling plays, it changed everything and we became way less predictable.

Needless to say, the offense was very frustrating while Edenfield was OC. When Brown started calling plays, it changed everything and we became way less predictable.

There are other aspects of the offense in those years that speak to outstanding play calling, such as the #12 3rd down conversion rate nationally in 2012 and #38 in 2013, when they were the #31 scoring offense nationally. In 2013 their red zone TD% was actually pretty good, 66.04%, which was 43rd nationally.
The 2010 offense was also his and that group was #20 nationally in scoring at 34.1 ppg.

It's hard to quantify the effect all those bad defenses had on the play calling as well. Once Troy got into scoring territory there had to be some inclination on his part to eat a little clock because giving the ball to the opponent was often going to result in giving some points back.

I'm not saying Brown isn't a very talented offensive mind, just that Edenfield's track record indicates he's probably better than given credit for.
