OT - Memphis rounds out BB staff
While there's no Larry Brown on staff - he was told he could only be a consultant, to which he declined - it's still a formidable (in clout, at least) staff.

Former NBA coach of the year, Sam Mitchell, rounds out the staff and gives Penny plenty of HC experience.

Does the AAC become Memphis _____ then everyone else? TBD

He has a staff full of good coaches. Even if he is clueless there are plenty of others to draw up the plays and coach guys up.

Memphis has two high four star recruits and a few high three at recruits in the 2028 class. They already have one 4-star recruit for 2019. Anyone who thinks they aren’t going to be dangerous are fooling themselves.

i don't know which is more bizarre, penny having eight year olds locked up or recruiting services ranking the top eight year olds in the country. or maybe it's a typo

Slow your roll, there. We're coming off a disappointing tournament loss. Memphis is coming of a disappointing half decade. I'd much rather be in our position.

Not sure I'm all that thrilled with our last decade but regardless, you'd take our coaching staff over their's?

we'll see how big penny's ego is. he already refused to learn on the job, i.e. take an assistant job first. pretty much gave memphis an ultimatum. we'll see if he listens. i'm jelly for sure right now, but it's the total memphis thing to do as of late. josh pastner was 25 years old when he took over tiger doodie. they'll do anything to restore their prior glory. i can't blame them and i wish them all the luck in the world

I imagine Memphis fans are as excited about Penny Hardaway as we were while Fickell was putting together his staff and first recruiting class. It's hard not to be excited about fresh air being pumped into a program... Lord knows our basketball team needs some changes of its own.

I'd rather have the excitement over Fickell than the excitement over Hardaway. Fickell's staff isn't as nationally recognized, and he probably won't be as good at winning games. But at least Fickell doesn't come with a near certainty of the NCAA forcing us to forfeit wins during his tenure.

I kinda doubt Penny is gonna run a dirty program. He's independently wealthy, he's beloved in the city, he's going attract kids off his rep & connections alone.

I just don't see it.

Either way, I'm happy with CLF, but not so much with Mick. I'd swap out basketball situations in a heartbeat.

You guys are nuts. Penny hasn't coached a single minute of big-time ball. I'm sure he'll be successful and bring in some impressive talent, but do you realize how many programs struggle to make it to our level? In the grand scheme of things it's a complete luxury that we can actually have a "Fire Mick" thread after the season we just had. I know it's been dissapointing to not advance further in the postseason but the meltdown on this board if we just had the 5-6 years Memphis had would be unparalleled.

Uc basketball is in far better position than the Memphis program throwing a hail Mary with a head coach who never coached at this level. I think drexler at Houston is a more likely result than Memphis back as a top 25 program.

Good analogy; that didn't work out too well at Houston. The AAC (and UC) need a strong Memphis program to build visibility, enhance RPI, and renew a rivalry that will have us driving to Memphis again for some big games. So while I'm somewhat skeptical of where it goes I wish them well.

Oh me too. I'd love for Memphis to at least become what Pitt was in football under Wandstadt. Wandstadt had Pitt bringing in really good talent, but he wasn't a good enough coach to get them over the hump. My hope is Penny is good enough to get them to a level where they are competing for tournaments again... I just think to expect this sudden explosion is a big assumption given a complete lack of track record.

So we're just going to totally ignore that he has extensive head coaching experience on his staff? Former NBA Coach of the Year, Sam Mitchell. Like, c'mon. Larry Bird had never coached a game in his life before he took on the HC position with the Pacers....and that's in the NBA!

Drexler retired from the NBA on a Friday, and took the Houston job on a Monday. Penny has at least been coaching on some level. We're talking about a guy moving up levels in the profession, not a guy landing in the profession all together outta nowhere.

Furthermore, it's not like Coach Cal is exactly an expert coach. He basically rolls the ball out there and let's his talent do the rest. Memphis is going to have a similar strategic advantage. You can win a whole lotta games in CBB on talent, and talent alone. S hit gets real as you ascend in the tourney, but then again, he's got hella coaching experience on staff in the form of Tony Madlock and Sam Mitchell.

You can go ahead and book it. Memphis is gonna be a top 25 program. Just how high they go is the thing that's up for debate. I'd say in a year or 2 we'll all be looking up to the Tigers in our league. Which....ya know, not the worst thing in the world. I'm all for the AAC getting an alpha dog that can command the national spotlight. Penny ain't going nowhere, no time soon, so this is something that's gonna stick. That's great!

I'm willing to make a bet with anyone on here that UC finishes higher in the AAC more in the next 5 years than Memphis does. (We can even do it by who finishes higher in kenpom if you really want to get up my ally.). Hell lets do it the next 10 years....$50.00 dollars a season. Each season team that finishes ahead wins.

Um, I'll argue with it.

Some of you are hitting the Penny kool aid pretty hard.

Championships are not won on paper. Individuals do not always have chemistry. You don't walk right in to major college basketball and become the new sheriff in town.

You think these assistant coaches are going to cover for the head coach's inexperience? And if they do, what kind of respect are the players going to have for a coach that doesn't know what he's doing... and the all know it.

That sounds like a mess to me.

Memphis has double digit losses next year. Count on it.

"command the national spotlight" was more my gripe. Will we ever kick the door down? Or just keep peaking inside?
