RE: Worst moment in your athletic history
The worst moment in WKU history, for me, was when everyone jumped ship from the Sun Belt in 1991 and left WKU, USA, and Jacksonville left behind to merge with the old American South schools. The teams that left for greener pastures were UAB, ODU, Charlotte, VCU and USF.

Yes, there is the obvious, and behind that would be the Doc Holiday era.

1. DH is responsible for the worst debacle (wvu at home in 2010) in Marshall sports history, among countless other debacles (like opting for field goals in OT against VT in a rain storm).
2. DH is responsible for not one, but the top TWO worst HOME blowout losses in Edward's stadium history (against UCF & WKU).
3. DH is THE most fraudulent recruiter in MU history and probably all of college football. 3 of his top 5 recruits each year NEVER see the field (and he knows that ahead of time). 5 of his top 10 NEVER see the field. And it shows. Out talented to the tune of 3-9 2 years ago and even last year in a poor conference. His one and only redeemable value was that he was this "great recruiter". He produces very little NFL talent and regularly get's out recruited when all said and done in one of the worst conferences in college football.
4. DH regular season records through the years; 5-7, 6-6, 5-7, 3-9, 7-5 and then had 3 10 win season when conference got gutted, combined with ultra conservative play calling led to the BIGGEST EXODUS of Marshall football fans in program history. Last year's home attendance hit a 20 year or more low.
5. Went 3-9 just 2 years ago in THE worst conference in I-A college football.
6. In almost 40 YEARS of coaching Has NEVER been offered a Head Coaching job at ANY LEVEL other than at Marshall.
7. Imagine your team regularly punting on your opponent's 38, imagine never seeing a trick play (or even motion), imagine other coaches saying how simplistic your offense is, imagine running clock on a slim lead beginning of 3rd quarter (so you can get off field and go to bed), imagine having a head football coach who acts like he hates playing the game. That is what Marshall fans have seen for 8 years now.
8. DH's Record against teams with a pulse is utterly abysmal. After 8 years in the game, and after a 3-6 campaign, STILL could not beat one team in regular season with a winning record last year.

So is the problem Doc Holiday or playing in the worse conference in D-1A?

RE: Worst moment in your athletic history
I think Western's Worst moment in football is still playing out....

But thinking back the thing that set the Western sports program back more than anything was UofL vetoing Western's slot in the Metro in favor of S. Miss

That actually changed both schools...Western for the worse and S. Miss for the better

You had one program that was top 5 in winning% and top 7 or 8 in over all wins, top 15 in NCAA appearances . Only 10 years removed from a F4, and 4 other NCAA bids between that F4 and the date S. Miss got the slot. Four top 5 AP polls and a total of 14 top 20 in the AP in the 32 years before S. Miss got that Metro slot.......Western had a winning record in head to head over every team in the Metro at that time. Had a 8 game lead over UofL in head to head

S. Miss had won 20 games once in their history and only 4 winning seasons ...20,17,16, 15 wins.

Metro
UofL
V.Tech
Fla. St
Cincy
Tulane
Memphis St (at that time)

Yeah, that is easily the Worst moment in Western's history. Not only did it change basketball but most likely Western moves up to 1A in football a lot sooner.

Think about where S. Miss would have been. Most likely playing most of the SBC schools in FB and a history in FB very different than today. Probably ended up in the Southland conference and then ASC and in 1991-92, the SBC and still there today or last in CUSA.....

CUSA took markets up till their last pick and ended up with Western

S.Miss fans should have sent UofL a thank you card instead of the F-You

That very well could one of the top 5 worst moments for USM...the fact we once shared a conference with P5 teams Florida St, South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Louisville. Granted football wasn't involved but still.....

Not one of those football programs during the METRO were close to what they are today.

Fla St wasn't bad, actually decent but still not the national program they are today. That didn't start to happen till really late 80s

V. Tech had one top 20 finish till the early 1990s

Cincy had maybe 2 winning records and that was a game over .500 when there was a Metro

Memphis St was awful in FB

UofL probably had 2 maybe 3 winning FB seasons during the Metro

But yes I see your point in the what ifs...

Charlotte has shared leagues with the following P5 or AAC teams quite successfully as well (without even having football at the time) and had winning records against most of these in mens bball:

Virginia Tech
Louisville
Cincinnati
Memphis
Marquette
TCU
South Florida
Tulane
Depaul

among others.......

RE: Worst moment in your athletic history
The final four is obviously Charlotte’s Waterloo, but I’m giving a silver and bronze

In Bobby Lutz’s last year(2010) , we were 18-5 and getting votes. We ended losing all finishing 19-12, going 1-7 in the last eight.
In the last game of the season we played nationally ranked Richmond and had them beat, but we missed 6 Free throws and committed a intentional foul on a breakaway dunk in the last ninety seconds to lose in OT.
I honestly think that if we had won that game, Lutz doesn’t get fired and our basketball program doesn’t denigrate into 2017-2018.

The bronze goes to two moments in the 2016 football season.
We’ve got the ball up 10 with 10 minutes left against FIU and Lambert runs
Seven running plays, a completed pass, and a FG that TOOK only 3:11 off the clock, giving MCGough seven minutes to score two touchdowns and beat us 27-26 (don’t get me started about the missed xp).
Later that season, we had a 21-0 lead on Rice and had our last healthy OL leave the game in the second quarter, and ended up losing 22-21 because we could move the ball or protect the qb for the last 35 minutes of the game. Watching the people in my section slowly realizing what was happening was awful.
So we didn’t go 6-6 and bowl even though it was set up for us to do so.

We were due. We did a double front-flip faceplant. From 12-2 to 0-12. Truly spectacular. Book-worthy.

Things didn't exactly go swimmingly.

As to Rice, we've had so many in last 50 years, and seem to want to keep adding. Your #7 above sounds very familiar. Any clapping involved?

When we were left behind after the first cusa split and forced to leave.

Obviously losing some of the top programs was devastating for cusa, but I believe Charlotte and cusa would have been better off had we been allowed to stay.

2012 season. Beat Virginia, Illinois, damn near beat Johnny Football in an epic game. Went into last two games 9-1 with sole loss to No. 22 Texas A&M, favored to win remaining games, with Orange Bowl officials in Ruston. We lost in overtime at home, then lost the final game, got passed over by the Liberty Bowl, and ended up with no bowl. Went from probable Orange Bowl to no bowl in two weeks.

12-2 to 0-12 then 1-11 and 3-9......that was a brutal stretch in our athletics program. We really never recovered from it.

During those two middle years we were absolutely DESTROYED by average CUSA teams. I mean completely DEMOLISHED. That's hard to stomach for any program, let alone one coming off 15+ winning seasons in a row.

The IPF might be bad for the football program but what they would have been giving up to use (since it would be a lease back to the school on university ground) it (medical insurance and coverage choice for all university employees for ever) might have been even worse.

I'm still disappointed yall didnt beat aggy that year. That game we had against yall that year was probably one of the most exciting games I've ever seen live. Southern Miss in 2015 is up there too, but didn't yall decline a bowl or something?

The lowest point in FAU's football history was, probably, the 77-56 loss to MTSU. Scoring 56 and still losing by 3 TDs? Brrrr...

Most FAU fans do not remember the 3-26 and 2-27 seasons in basketball in mid-1990s...

RE: Worst moment in your athletic history
I can say without a doubt that the '92 Regents vote was our defining moment, but we voted to keep football.

What would have changed? Would we have invested what was left after the $6M+ budget cut obligation into basketball?

Would we have exploded back onto the national scene?

Or would we have slid into obscurity after a bad coaching hire or two (assuming in this "butterfly effect" scenario cutting the football program affected many other things at the school in unforeseen and intangible ways)?

Would we just have become the next ETSU?

Who can say. There are some folks here who'd have a pretty good guess but not me 04-cheers

RE: Worst moment in your athletic history
Worst moment for WKU in RECENT history has to be this:

Not necessarily that exact moment, but that play - on the way to getting demolished by FIU to end the regular season 6-6 after starting 5-2 - just solidified a miserable and embarrassing season that had such high expectations (many thought 10+ wins was easily attainable). Unless there's a miracle turnaround this season, that might have been the visual representation of the reversal of all the progress that had been made in the previous 5 years.
