Division I football players are now allowed to play in up to four games in a season while keeping a redshirt and not losing a year of eligibility. The NCAA previously considered a redshirt burned if a player took the field for a single play of live action in any game.

I wonder if it is retroactive?

I think this is excellent

-If someone really develops at practice over the season you can use them to help at the end of the year, without losing a year of eligibility.
-If someone isn't ready to go or regresses you can still throw a shirt on them.
-Test out a player you aren't sure how they'll produce in game.
-Let young guys play late against week competition and still have 4 years to play.
-Early injuries won't need a hardship.
-Likely fewer transfers over PT
-Late season FCS matchups (for SEC fans at least) and bowl games suddenly a lot more interesting.

Hard to see the downside here

Man, ODU's QB would have benefited from that last year.

This is a major boon to the P5 and a blow to the G5.

One of the few selling points a G5 could offer to a 3 or 3 1/2 star player who was choosing between them and a P5 was "hey, come here and you can play immediately, but you know at the P5 you're going to sit a whole year with a redshirt".

Now that "redshirt" can mean playing 4 games, maybe 4 critical games at the end of the season.

And even within the P5, it's a win for the elite powers over the lesser P5. No wonder Nick Saban was one of the first to come out with a statement applauding the decision. Lets him stockpile even more talent.

AState could have used this in 2015 when we were on fumes by the time the season ended but didn't want to burn redshirts.

If this new rule is retroactive, then Bama's championship-winning QB was a redshirt last season and still has 4 years of eligibility remaining.

And Miami wins the ‘02 National Championship over Ohio St. They lost that game because they ethically put Frank Gore’s interests first (save his redshirt) when Willis McGahee left hurt.

IMO, to be fair, it has to be retroactive.

This is true.

It will have a trickle down effect.

On the flip side, it may make late season games a lot more interesting.
