Then how can you claim that Georgetown was also the heart and soul of the BE
Pitt vs WVU? WVU did have the shine of the recent Rich-Rod success, of thumping other Power conferences in the big bowls but Pitt IMO was a more established national brand. Pitt's pedigree went back way farther, and in college football, farther counts a lot.
As I explained, the "heart and soul" had nothing to do with football. The H&S of the Big East was developed during the 1980s and was based in basketball. Georgetown was as much a part of the core of the Big East as anyone, Syracuse included. Heck, one could argue that it was Georgetown more than anyone who put the Big East on the map.
It's pretty amazing that i have to explain this to a fan of an original Big East member.
And I HAVE given Syracuse plenty of credit. I agreed that Syracuse was integral to the Big East. I agree that as successful as the "new" Big East has been, it hasn't been the same without you.
Also, you raise an interesting point: I do agree that had Syracuse somehow got stuck in the AAC, then it would have been much harder for the C7 to leave. Leaving UConn was hard, leaving UConn and Syracuse would have been very hard, we probably wouldn't have wanted to. You could have kept that old part of the band together, that's a lot of impact.
I've also made it clear that I've never for a moment had bitterness about Syracuse leaving. It was a no-brainer to leave and I've always understood that. Never claimed you or Pitt "stabbed us in the back" or anything like that. You did what you had to do.
I just haven't agreed with you that you deserve all the credit (the 'heat and soul' stuff), and somehow that irks you.
Sorry about that.
