Harnish was bad as a freshman. I don't remember him being too hot as a sophomore either. We need Childers to play better or we will have to watch teams just stack the box against us and our offense will be ineffective until we play bad MAC teams.

In this system , I just don't think dramatic improvement in the QB position is something that is realistic. The problem runs much much deeper than QB. QBs are not even given a chance to succeed right now

When exactly did that start? Obviously Harnish and Lynch succeeded. Hare seemed to be doing alright, and Maddie did fairly well for not having played most of his career.

Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if all of our QBs get gun-shy for fear of turning the ball over, since that appears to be an unforgivable error.

There is certainly a paralysis that is increasing with each year that passes in the conservative nature of this offense. NIU's has had a string of playmakers on offense including TLL, D. Brown, A Turner, KG that have helped to mitigate the conservativeness. This year though, I just worry when you combine a RC offense with few if any playmakers, it could spell some very very ugly football.

It's a possibility and I think this will be the year that determines whether that is right or wrong.

When Maddie was running the offense it felt like NIU offense of old. He really deserved to get another year of eligibility. It was too bad he didn't.

It is just really really hard to keep a QB not named Jordan Lynch healthy in this offense. The physical feat or Jordan Lynch playing almost straight through those 2 years is probably his greatest accomplishment. I have no idea how he took the physical beating he did. I sure miss watching him play. I wonder if Lynch would have had a shot in a Nagy offense with the Bears.

Yea, he seemed to be a playmaker. Disappointed he didn't get another year, would've been interesting.

Maddie was probably the closest fit NIU had, but I just think he did note quite have that pocket presence to be really effective

As mentioned, Harnish was not good his first year. Was that because of a bad system? We know he’s a great qb, so what was it then? Well duh, he was a just a freshman.

Harnish(8 games)
118/211(56%), 1528 yds, 8td-9int, qbr 121

Childers(9 games)
152/265(57%), 1674 yds, 16td-5int, qbr 127

It seems jaded to me to say this system is aweful(4th in the Mac with a freshman qb) or to say Childers sucks without qualifying that with the fact he’s a freshman. He’s inaccurate yes, but physical things can be worked out. I think he played mentally beyond what a freshman should be able to do, and that’s what has me supporting him.

This is an interesting stat. It just shows how important it is to give a QB a chance to develop. Lets hope Childers takes a quantum leap next year like Harnish did after his first year. Two things are necessary for Childers to be sucessful 1) he must be a running threat 2) he has to complete the deep pass. These are the key componets of this offense. He is our QB because of his legs. He averaged 186 yards per game passing;Harnish avg 191 over his first 9 games. In less than 5 games Santa was 81-137 nearly 60% 1080 yards which is 216 yards per game, 7 INT and 8TDs; he had a W over a Big 10 team and his only loss against a nationaly ranked team. Childers was the right choice given this scheme; his running was hampered by injuries last year. If his running gets back to where it was, and he completes the deep ball, this is a dangerous offense. If not, we will once again struggle against good teams. One thing for sure, Carey is all in on Childers.
