OT- What if UNCW changed its' name?
I've been thinking about this for quite some time. I'd like to see UNCW gain its' own identity beyond a little sister of UNC. Change to a name that recognizes the unique location of the school, but isn't limited to the city of Wilmington, which most of the country has never heard of.

Where would ECU be if they were UNC Greenville? Or NC State, if they were UNC Raleigh? How about App State as UNC Boone?

Some ideas i've had are Atlantic State Universty, Atlantic Coast University, Oceanic University, Oceanside University.

These names would not only get us out of the shadow of UNC, they would allow us to extend our brand beyond graduates and people who live in Wilmington. People living in Tennessee, Ohio, Georgia, Virginia, etc. could become fans of an Oceanic or Atlantic State University.

Curious about your thoughts on this idea.

Honestly, I would hate for UNCW to change their name. Wilmington is a city with a bunch of history and we should pride ourselves in that

University of Wilmington would be my vote

How would naming our school after being by the beach help us at all? Lots of schools are near beaches. At least with UNCW, it tells people we're in North Carolina. Atlantic State University could be in any state on the east coast.

University of Wilmington is a little better, but you'd still have the problem of people thinking we're in Delaware.

Sticking with UNCW is the best call. And I prefer it to the old UNC Wilmington as well.

RE: OT- What if UNCW changed its' name?
Shortly after Dr. Leutze became the Chancellor at UNCW, a bill was introduced in the NC Legislature to rename UNC-Chapel Hill "UNC". Some of the alums resented having the qualifier added to their diplomas.

One of people who spoke out against the bill was Dr. Leutze, who had been a professor at UNC for many years. He pointed out the history of the consolidation process and the schools gave up their individual autonomy to be part of a unified system. The goal was to prevent the schools from fighting with each other for appropriations.

The bill failed, as Dr. Leutze's effort drew publicity to the bill and people began to question why it was needed.

I started paying attention to UNCW and what Dr. Leutze was doing there, particularly emphasizing under graduate education. I thought UNCW might be a good place for my oldest daughter to go to college and it was.

UNCW tells people the school is in NC and is a public school. The W is not confused with any other city/town in eastern NC. No one confuses Wilmington with Windsor or Washington.

I really began to think about it when our last SGA President told me she had never heard of UNCW until she began applying to college and a friend told he about us. When I asked her where she grew up, she said...........RALEIGH.

I doubt she would have said the same about the schools I listed.

Also Atlantic State University wouldn't work because it would be shortened to ASU & then confused with Arizona State & even Appalachian State.
I am in complete agreement with 08 on this subject. UNCW is the best choice.

A lot of people haven’t heard of us. That was true even when we were UNC Wilmington. So what? We’ve got a great thing going here. And the more we win in athletics and do well academically, more people will hear about us.

A drastic name change at this stage would only serve to add confusion, not make things better.

That's not surprising though. Most high schoolers don't pay attention to colleges until they start applying. It is a little surprising that she grew up in Raleigh and wasn't familiar with the schools in the UNC system though.

I prefer Wilmington in the name. University of Wilmington or Wilmington University.

Appreciate the input. Just a thought I had and was curious what others thought.

Stop this nonsense. There is already a Wilmington University in New Castle, Delaware. We are UNCW. No need complicating things anymore.

If UNCW would be consistent in referring to itself as "UNCW" and nothing else (as opposed to the variety of names the school, itself, continues to use - watch the video about the new softball stadium and you will see what I mean) people would know it as "UNCW", just as "UCLA" is not confused with Cal-Berkley.

This is an old subject. It's really not that complicated. If Campbell's Soup , or Pepsi, referred to themselves by multiple names they would have a brand ID name problem as well.

I agree with most of the previous posters. The name change that was necessary was the branding of UNCW rather than UNC-Wilmington. The execution of this hasn't been the best however.

I took am a fan of the UNCW branding.

Why is it so hard for the university to apply it in a consistent manner?

Agree with the majority here, Brand the hell out of UNCW and stay consistent in doing so! If they see someone in the media referring to us as something else, correct it!
