RE: Dane Acker....transfer?
The only sports who are operating at a D1-level right now are football (talking in terms of staff, approach, non-conference scheduling, etc... much more could be done by admin to help but Bloomgren “gets it” in terms of what it takes), women’s soccer, women’s track and field, women’s basketball, women’s tennis, and volleyball.

Men’s tennis and women’s swimming are in purgatory.

Pera is way out of his league, baseball has no coach and has an athletic director who appears clueless in how to hire one, men’s XC/TF is consistently disappointing, and men’s golf somehow can’t consistently “medal” consistently in C-USA even when the profile of a college golf player is better for Rice than any other school in conference.

Love you, man, but come on-- where exactly was Luis going to play next year if not 1B?...

1B is the lone question mark

2B Trei Cruz, Cade Edwards
SS Trei Cruz, Cade Edwards
3B Comeaux
C Collins, DiCaprio (assuming he returns)
LF Dunlap/Cox (assuming he returns)
CF Antonio Cruz
RF Gneiting/Cox
DH Dunlap, Collins, DiCaprio

Ideally, our 1B should be a left-handed hitter to balance out the lineup a bit as we lost our 3 best left-handed hitters (Ford, Ryan, Chase).

RE: Dane Acker....transfer?
Acker is a huge loss as he was projected to be either our 3rd or 4th starter, or a key cog in the bullpen mix.

There's no question the uncertainty over Wayne's contract situation has taken a toll on recruiting, and it's the primary reason we lost two coaches last Summer. Now, thanks to no succession plan, the boggling of the handling of Wayne's departure and now the dragging feet in the hiring of a new head coach, we're starting to lose current roster players. If JK's goal is to destroy the baseball program, he's doing one heck of a job. 03-banghead

Walt- you really have to use If at this point? Of course that is what he is trying to do. There is a pattern going back 4 years and you are aware of most of it.

Ok Walt....who’s that left handed bat gonna be? We gonna create one?

Aviles most definitely had a chance to play at 1B. He’s got good power (and who gives a crap if it’s from the right side.)

Really great to see everyone starting to turn on Joe Karlgaard. Guy is a total poser and is more concerned about his image than how well he does his actual job.

Everybody is self-interested, wants a promotion, a bigger stage, etc, but few manage to neglect and **** up their current job so bad in the process.

At least Rhoades had a winning season before he left... Rice Athletics were better under Greenspan than Joe Karlgaard.

I was primarily refering to your comment about "the lineup looking really sketchy". It's actually pretty well set, and with quality returning and proven players.

RE: Dane Acker....transfer?
I mean this sincerely....I don’t know JK like some of you do but he has actually answered emails from time to time regarding other things (not complaints but rather questions)...so I guess I’m asking, have any of you emailed him or spoken to him about this perception of a bungled process and the frustration that it’s building? And as a follow up, maybe some of you guys with more pull should speak your mind to him regarding this debacle that is starting to make some current commits VERY NERVOUS. Direct communication to me this week at State tournament was very iffy regarding their situation with Rice and both said other coaches have asked “if they’re still firm with their commitment.” That came from 2 Rice commits. This could go really bad really quick.

And remember, the 2018 and 2019 class lost 2 huge commits last year. Ty Madden flipped to Texas and Josh Rivera flipped to Florida. Both flipped in large part because of the lack of a plan for Graham heading into last year. Both of those kids are incredible talents.

JK shouldn’t need anyone to tell him that he’s ******* this up. All he has to do is look at the current commits and signees tweeting at Kendall Rogers every day about the coaching search.

The guy is truly clueless.

There are surely valid criticisms of JK. But this particular thread seems to be based on the premise that guys are transferring to JC because it’s taken more than two weeks to hire a coach. Really?

We not only lost two recruits due to the uncertainty, but we lost two coaches. Yet, for some inexplicable reason, many on this message board and some of the university's biggest donors were defending the way JK handled Wayne's contract situation. 03-banghead

It’s a good point and those kids may have transferred for other reasons. However, I know for certain that there are current commits who held multiple offers that are wondering what the hell is going on. And when a competing coach goes up to a kid and says, “hey man, you sure you don’t want to reconsider us? Rice doesn’t even have a coach”.....it gives an 18 year old a lot to think about.

THAT’S HAPPENING.

I think “many on this message board” defended the contract decision due to declining performance and some indications of stubbornness on the side of Coach Graham.

“Many on this message board” also expected a competent coaching search that did not waste time interviewing fishing guides.

And for the umpteenth time-- it was not the eventual contract decision (e.g., whether or not it was time to transition) that was boggled, but rather the way it way woefully mishandled from last Summer onward. Yet many people, including yourself, were defending it; putting the blame on The OG instead.

I agree with both of you. The fact that JK actually spent time interviewing Norm Charlton, fresh off a fishing boat, it’s something out of a B-movie. Norm even said he didn’t want to spend his time grinding out recruiting etc. WTF did he even waste his time driving up from Rockport for???

Like him or not, valid concerns or not, Lance WANTS THE JOB. Give it to him and let’s go! At this point, it CANNOT get worse. And hiring Lance would at least secure the commits we have currently...that’s for sure.

Not to play tit for tat here but I would comment that for much of this spring you were advocating for one more year in 2019 so I’m not exactly sure that you were initially at peace with the eventual contract decision.

Either way, I think we both agree that whatever has happened May 1 onward has been an utter debacle so let’s leave it at that.
