This post is mainly for UTSA fans, but if anybody else has any info/advice to add I would really appreciate it.

Next month i'm traveling to San Antonio for a security conference/training. I'll be staying in the downtown area and was looking for recommendations of places to eat and drink. Bars, pubs, restaurants etc. Also places of interest that you think I should check out. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

I agree with Southtown, good food and fun. Just north of Downtown is The Pearl and it is loaded with really good restaurants and a few bars and a really nice area. It can get busy and parking can be a little difficult but if you like good food and cocktails, it's worth it. Enjoy yourself while you're here, just not too much, the drunk tank sucks (but conveniently located downtown too). :Cheers

Thanks. I'll be staying at the Valencia on the Riverwalk. If it's too far I'll catch a cab or Uber.

If you want the authentic San Antonio Mexican food experience, look for one of the restaurants called "Taqueria Datapoint." They have several locations and the food is extra outstanding.

Thanks for the info. I was told by a co worker to do the Alamo tour. Is that any good?

Yes, it is. And if that's your thing, you might also consider checking out the other missions, which were newly "upgraded" to a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Alamo is the most historically significant, but the others are more beautiful. You can Uber or rent a SWell bike, as there is a popular bike path connecting them all.

I second the calls for Southtown and Pearl. Both are very walkable and fun. Southtown is more grassroots and artsy, and Pearl is more upscale but still relaxed, and beautiful as well. Both are directly adjacent to less-traveled parts of the famous River Walk.

clt says there is a Irish bar on the river walk. Was full of Alaskans and Idaho potato farmers during clt’s last visit. Fun times.

Nothing beats hotlanta, tho.

Thanks for all the info. Really looking forward to the trip. One last question, how far is UTSA campus from downtown? Think i'm gonna get a rental so I can really explore San Antonio.

UTSA’s main campus is 20 minutes north west of downtown straight up I10. There is also a downtown campus right west of downtown that has some pretty interesting buildings and good views of downtown

Also If you’re driving around check out Julian’s. Some of the best New York style pizza and Italian food in general that I’ve had in the south. Still not as good as my grandmas was though :)

Southtown, the Pearl, and just strolling the Riverwalk are must sees. And I agree with everyone else that the Alamo tour is good, but don't miss the rest of the Mission Reach. El Mercado is fun too, but you'll have to uber or lyft there. It's been a few years since I moved from SA to the coastal bend, and I desperately want to move back.

RE: San Antonio
La Fogata as mentioned earlier is a great mexican restaurant. Generally I would avoid mexican on the river walk. One of my favorite mexican restaurants is El Mira Sol. South town has some good and unique restaurants. Battalion and Feast are two I know of. They are a little different in that you order several smaller portions of dishes. Battalion is a little more upscale than Feast but both offer great food and particularly the breakfast/brunch at Feast on the weekend is great.

Stay in your room and order pizza.

J/K. SA is a great place to visit.

If you rent a car, lots of nice small towns with varying ethnic flavors within easy driving distance.
