Hawks have hired Matt Myers as our new pitching coach. In the meantime Matt Williams has been turned down by at least three major schools after they learned of the unfounded baggage he now carries.

Glad we filled the position quickly.

I hope coach Wiiliams lands on his feet somewhere soon. IMHO he deserves a fair shot at a good position.

Any word on the status of our recruits that were drafted?

It's a damn crying shame. If he legitimately did something to deserve having his reputation ruined, so be it, but that's not the case here at all

The deadline to sign should be passing if not already passed, correct?

I know the kid from Chapel Hill is coming, heard from a former teammate of his.

Gesell's stats are based on my previous update a couple weeks ago. I don't see him listed on High Point-Thomasville's stat page at all, but I know he made at least that 2 starts.

An article talks about his more successful start, but I can't view the full article. Sounds like he pitched great in a 3-1 victory: http://www.hpenews.com/sports/gesell-hit...556ec.html

The good news is, among that group, only Jones and Ryan are considered "core players" for next season. The rest are guys competing for playing time. Was still hoping for more out of several of them, however.

I do like the K/BB ratios for Lawson and Bruno, however. That's a more telling stat than ERA in a Summer league, where the defense isn't always the best (not in terms of errors, in terms of range and ability. You can be less than stellar defensively without committing errors).

The Spring Training Banquet is tomorrow. I can't make it; anyone going?

https://uncwsports.com/news/2018/11/30/b...an-19.aspx

Spring Training Banquet Set For Jan. 19

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW head baseball coach Mark Scalf has announced the program will hold the 17th annual Spring Training Banquet on Jan. 19, 2019, and will feature Brian Bridges, the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Atlanta Braves, as the keynote speaker.

Bridges recently completed his fourth season at his current position and his 11th overall with the Braves. Prior to being promoted, Bridges spent four seasons as the Braves southeast regional cross checker. During his tenure as an area supervisor and regional cross checker, Bridges was instrumental in the signings of Jason Heyward, Craig Kimbrel and Alex Wood among others.

Tickets for the event may be purchased for $70 each and $700 for corporate (seven seats) tables. Checks should be made payable to the Seahawk Club with Baseball Banquet on the memo line.

Joining Bridges as speakers that evening are former Seahawk pitching standout Seth Frankoff and junior outfield Kep Brown.

Frankoff, who pitched for the Seahawks from 2007-10, pitched for the Doosan Bears KBO League in South Korea last season, helping the team to the league's world series. Frankoff led the league with 18 wins and struck out 134 hitters in 149.1 innings. A native of Raleigh, N.C., Frankoff was selected by Oakland in the 28th round of the 2010 draft and later made his Major League debut on June 9, 2017, with the Chicago Cubs.

Brown was instrumental in UNCW's late season run to a Colonial Athletic Association championship and NCAA Regional appearance. Brown finished his first season with the Seahawk with a .267 batting average, 12 doubles and seven home runs. His bases-loaded single in the 13th inning lifted UNCW to a 4-3 win over Ohio State in an elimination game at the Greenville Regional.

Banquet check-in begins at 4:45 p.m. at the Burney Center on the UNCW campus. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and the night's program includes player introductions of the 2019 team, 2018 season highlight video and announcing the 2018 award winners.

Prior to the dinner, attendees will have an opportunity to review sports memorabilia and local Wilmington business gift packages that will be part of the silent auction.
