If that incident happened sometime back and he was reprimanded for it already, then why was he just fired regarding the incident? Did more information come to light and was he not forthcoming?

Was the incident major or minor, in your opinion 33?

National honors starting to roll in.

Cota Named NCBWA All-America

Three Seahawks earn ABCA All-Region honors

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW standout reliever Clark Cota has been honored by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association as a third-team All-America selection after anchoring one of the nation's top bullpens.

Mason Berne and Ryan Jeffers were named Rawlings First-team All-Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association on Wednesday after leading UNCW to its fifth Colonial Athletic Association championship and the NCAA Regionals for a ninth time. Cota was named to the second team.

All three were selected in last week's Major League Baseball Draft with Jeffers going in the second round to Minnesota, Cota in the 10th to Oakland and Berne was taken in the 33rd round by Atlanta. The trio was a part of a program-record tying six-member draft class.

Berne was a first-team All-CAA honoree after hitting a career and team-high .343 with 14 doubles and 12 home runs. He collected 82 hits to lead the Seahawks and drove in 56 runs.

Jeffers, who like Berne and Cota was a First-team All-CAA selection, hit .315 and led the lineup with 22 doubles, 16 home runs and 59 runs batted in. Jeffers also drew 51 walks and posted a .460 on base average.

Cota tied a program record with 13 saves his junior season. The righthander compiled a 4-0 mark and a 2.04 earned run average while limiting opponents to a meager .145 batting average.

From what I heard, he seemed to have a minor part in it. He didn't realize he needed to report it. But I'm told he was reprimanded for not reporting it and it was supposed to be over. I don't know the whole story, but I would think that there is a reason the players are so upset and pointing fingers at the administration.

Seems like Matt was the scapegoat, which is unfortunate. A suspension seems justifiable, but firing the guy is ridiculous over a *****.

The craziest thing about this story, is I grew up in the town over from Brian Cain, played against him in Hoops and baseball my whole life growing up.

What a crazy crazy story

I hope no one transfers because of this ordeal, but I wouldn’t be surprised. Wow, I never thought I’d read the words “Dick of Death” and “UNCW Baseball” in the same article.

My question is, who approved paying for this type of motivational speaking? Seems like a total waste of money to me.

I can get behind the mantra "Dick of Death" however; has a good ring to it.

Sometimes it feels like our university goes out of it's way to make life difficult for itself

Fire an award winning AD over an overblown swim team party - Check

Runoff a successful basketball coach because he doesn't play uptempo enough - Check

Banning cotton eye joe because it offended someone - Check

Lead an inept basketball coaching search that garners negative national headlines - Check

Fire a successful and respected pitching coach because college athletes had college humor - Check

Cant wait for what's next

RE: Seahawk Baseball in 2019
Hopefully there can be a workaround on this. Is it classy? No. Is it that college students unifying on a particular icon/thought process to focus on athletics? Yes. Whether I or anyone else feels that this is what we should stand for or shouldn't matter in this particular case is highly debatable. The players play ball and are good kids and didn't come out about this, but what were the prevailing thoughts of all the players? Were they offended? It appears no, but if there were some, that could be a problem-I don't think so,but it's possible. Williams was complicit with this yes, but apparently this has been going on elsewhere too. Do you leave that to the coach or is it bigger than that? Scalf is a legend and knows how to run a program better than well...anyone in this country. He's the best coach period.

The administration has to look hard into this one I think. Matt's been very successful, no doubt. The question will be: What kind of example is this? The flip side is that they have no idea of the mentality of team building and the overall attitude of a college baseball team about this. Tough call. Again, were any of the players offended by this?

IMHO...ff this was a problem, it should have been dealt with at the time of knowing. The continued activity however causes concern for the administration though. We shall see how it unfolds. My hope is that they reconsider, but ask that the activity ceases. A replacement icon can be made. A replacement pitching coach capable of high levels is harder to find.

If it's a done deal, Hawks have a terrific program and will be fine in the end. My hope for Matt is that he ends up okay because his work on the field was terrific and will be hired soon. Everyone makes mistakes, everyone. You have to look at the overall picture here on more time and then proceed in a unified manner. That's how you do this. It's a shame if it goes down like this.

This is frustrating and should've been handled by the administration much better. If you suspend Williams for a week, you send the desired message and prevent sensationalizing the story. Frustrating that we can't get out of our own way to take the next step.

I’d like to know why he was the one given the axe for that and nothing about whoever signed off on paying Cain thousands of dollars. I doubt that’s the first time he mentioned a “**** of Death”.

After reading the article its hard to develop another takeaway besides the admin lied to the team

The players felt strongly enough about the coach that they were willing to boycott a big game

The administration said they heard the team and the two parties worked out an agreement

The administration then renigged on the agreement after the season and fired the coach

Sure, there’s that. Then there’s the fact that they obviously took issue with Cain’s tactics. Instead of reprimanding with suspensions for players, a coach, and whoever had that guy get paid A LOT of money to speak to more than just our baseball team... they used Williams as a scapegoat. It wouldn’t surprise me if players transfer.

This is not a good look for a program that was finally starting to make significant strides towards the next level, and IMO, the entirety of the blame here for this mess resides with the athletic department.

How do you pay someone THAT much money to speak to teams, have skype conversations, etc and not put an athletic dept official in the room for quality control?

I'm sure our someone in our hyper sensitive administration took issue with college males acting like college males and finding humor in things that are crude.

This could have been handled internally with a firm cut the stupid crap. Now thanks to the administration this is what UNCW baseball will be known for.

Just a fantastic case study for what NOT to do

I'm just so tired of this garbage from the higher ups

Yep. This story has now gone across the country. People were tweeting it that don’t usually tweet about college baseball, let alone UNCW.
