I doubt the conference is going to enter a challenge, as the only alternatives left are the A10, MWC or the Missouri Valley. What I see more likely is that school's are going to be pushed to schedule better OOC.

I don't think there's any arrangement between the Big East and the SEC (don't know about the Big 12). I believe the only challenges the Big East keeps are the Gavitt Games with the B1G and the recently-announced one with the Big 12.

My initial reaction to any talk of an SEC-AAC scheduling arrangement is wishful thinking, as the SEC could likely secure something with the PAC that would further their idea of a P5/G5 demarcation across multiple sports and avoid certain schools having to play an in-state "little brother". However, if there are actual real talks regarding this beyond "the AAC would like this and the SEC isn't interested" then it may be an indication that ESPN's ready to invest heavily in the conference (which I doubt, but is possible). All the games would be under their umbrella, which wouldn't be the case with an SEC-PAC challenge, and it would serve to elevate AAC basketball in the eyes of nationwide audiences. Not saying I think this is remotely likely, but it's something to talk about.

I misspoke yesterday-- The Big East and Big 12 recently entered into a scheduling "Challenge" starting next year.

Which is not what Bowen is talking about. This is more like a certain number of SEC teams willing to play a certain number of AAC teams during the season.
