5. SMU - Sonny Dykes
6. TULSA - Philip Montgomery
7. TEMPLE - Geoff Collins

9. CONNECTICUT - Randy Edsall
10. CINCINNATI - Luke Fickell

...sorry if this was already posted.
That was before the season started, which makes it more reasonable, since Fickell and Huepel were untested. Now it looks stupid, of course.
Agree that Heupel was a big unknown, but Fickell had already started to turn things around at Cincinnati. I got a bigger chuckle from all of the UConn fans who were telling all of us that Edsall was being ranked way too low (before he oversaw a record setting performance by the Huskies defense).
I think if I were going to rank them now, I'd have...
1 - Fickell
2 - Niumatalolo
3 - Norvell
5 - Heupel (was this a Heupel coaching job or remnants of what Frost did?)
4 - Applewhite
6 - Collins
7 - Strong
8 - Dykes
9 - Fritz
10 - Edsall
11 - P. Montgomery
12 - S. Montgomery

Come on, talk about pissing on a grave. Not sure about Phil Montgomery, but Scotty was clearly better than Edsall.

What's more comical about Fickell being ranked so low preseason was the fact there was a national article on 247 that included CLF on the "Hot Seat List".

To be fair to Edsall, a chef is only as good as his ingredients, and Diaco left him a cupboard full of quinoa and stale potato chips. For the same reason I can't say Heupel is assured of being a top coach, I can't condemn Edsall for being the worst given what he had to work with. And the man did coach them to a Fiesta Bowl in the past.

West and some other Houston fans will be complaining loudly for first putting Applewhite 4th, than sliding him down the 5th. I'd think they have him much lower. Houston had too much talent to not be better by at least 1 or 2 more wins. You mention Heupel benefiting from Frost but I suspect that Applewhite benefited by Herman's recruiting. Was Herman the coach who recruited Oliver?
If I'm giving Applewhite too much credit for D'Eriq King's rise (I don't think anybody heard of him prior to the 2017 USF game), then he deserves to be a few spots lower on my list. But otherwise, I have no problem with him at #5 (despite my poor math/list skills as evidenced above).
On a tangent, Herman's kind of proving to be a dick (at least the second ex-Cougar head coach to go be one after Art Briles). Not exactly sure why recruits seem to flock to him. After the last year, I'm really hoping karma bites that guy in the ass...

Fritz turned Tulane into a midlevel AAC team. Think about that. He's probably top half in the AAC considering that he's almost broken the cycle of uncompetitive conference play.
He needs a few nonconference wins next season, and if he gets them people will start paying attention to what he's done.

Edsall is a bum and should've been canned after the season. They have 5 total commits right now and probably have 60 or 70 offers out there. I'm not even really sure how that's possible if your coaching staff has a pulse.
They may possibly get worse than they were this year. UConn needs to go out and find a young NE guys who's hungry like the Maine HC.
