(Not knowing my deep Rice baseball history, when was the first player from Rice first selected in the first round? Was it before or after the OG started?)

Maybe Norm Charlton in 1984? Also saw that Norm has 3 degrees from Rice.
14 of the 18 CUSA 1st round picks have been from Rice. Justin Verlander out of ODU is one of the 4. Who are the others?
Maybe a UH pitcher or two?
If they're counting ODU's Verlander (before ODU joined the conference) then they shouldn't be including any UH (e.g., Wagner, Lincoln), Tulane (Owens) or ECU players. Wasn't Sandlin picked in 1st round or supplemental round this year?

That's what I was thinking. Or maybe a USM player?
Of course, I'm not sure how they determine conference affiliation. Conference at the time the player was drafted, I would assume. Or conference now? I don't believe ODU was a part of CUSA when Verlander was drafted.

Sandlin was not a first rounder this year.

Pretty certain they're determining it by current affiliation. We know that Rice hasn't had 14 1st rounders just while a member of CUSA.

Jeff Forney (FAU) was a 1st round pick in 1985.
Wayne Gomes (ODU) was a 1st round pick in 1993. Terry Bell (1983) and Paul Mitchell (1971) were also 1st round picks from ODU.
Henry Urbanowitz (USM) was a 1st round pick in 1966.
Aaron Blair (Marshall) was a 1st round pick in 2013, Colt Griffin (Marshall) was a 1st round pick in 2001.
I'm not sure how they came up with the number that they did.

Colt Griffin was from Marshall HS, not the university.

...and though unrelated to the draft, Matt Canterino was just selected to pitch-- or at least tryout-- for Team USA this Summer. If he makes the team, I believe he'll be our first representative since after Otto's Sophomore season.

It's absolutely related to next year's draft though. A good summer and he'll be a sure-fire top 3 round pick next year. I'm not convinced he'll make Team USA quite yet. If his control is on target, he's got a good chance. But he had a few rough outings this year when he wasn't placing his pitches where he wanted.

If he fails to make the team, he'll return to the Cape, where the scouts hang out for the Summer. Either way, if he pitches well he'll be on their radar next season.

I am always concerned wih Rice kids pitching for Team USA. It is a great honor, but CSC was not the same (even before the weight lifting incident). I guess I have too long a memory. It is my guess that WG had concerns about the pitching stress over the Summer when you were on Team USA. But I am just guessing.

Again, semi-related to the draft, but Canterinio is dominating on the Cape tonight for Falmouth vs Y-D

Apparently, Matt Canterino has made it on the Team USA squad.

Looks like he made the final 34 which will compete against the CPL Select team and play in the 18th USA vs. Chinese Taipei International Friendship Series. But he's not one of the 18 players already selected for the USA/Cuba and USA/Japan series. Out of the remaining 16 players, 6 more will be selected for USA/Japan and 8 more will be selected for USA/Cuba.
Either way, it's a nice deal for him so congrats on making it through the first cut.

He's made the 34-man roster for games in the U.S., but will be competing with 18 others for the 6 remaining spots on the 24-man international roster for games in Cuba and Japan later this Summer.

I'm not sure why you felt a need to duplicate my exact same thread 3 1/2 hours after the fact but your post was a bit incorrect and mine was correct according to the link I posted. As I posted, it will be a 22-man squad for USA-Japan and 24-man for USA-Cuba. Furthermore, USA-Japan is in the United States. The USA-Cuba series would be in Cuba.
If he makes the Cuba roster, he can be a tour guide for everyone else.

Obviously, because I was responding to an earlier post on this thread before I got to yours. I respond to posts as I read them in chronological order; I don't wait to read all the posts in the thread first, then go back and respond. I had no idea at the time I was duplicating your post.

RE: MLB Draft - Rice
So the deadline for signing players has passed. I'm assuming Antonio Cruz didn't sign. Did Salinas sign? Can't he return next year? And then I guess Staab is another one who could sign or return next year? I think that's all the Rice guys to watch (Proctor obviously signed and is already playing in the minors).
