CUSA Basketball Schedule Revamp
Good press on CUSA innovating schedules to hopefully boost RPIs and score better tourney seeds.

"Instead of releasing a hard-set regular season conference schedule, C-USA will seed its teams after the opening 14 games of the conference slate. The conference will then face its best teams off against one another over the next four games, with the end goal of placing multiple teams in the NCAA tournament and securing higher seeds for those teams."

I can't wait to be mired in the B-flight of CUSA. Probably a good move trying to get CUSA beyond a 1 bid league, but holy hell will these lower tier games be complete write-offs.

The French do this in their top rugby competition. It works pretty well, and the mid season cut date is pretty intense.

I like it. If we are top 5, it gives us a great opportunity. If we are bottom 5, those last four games were going to be meaningless anyway.

They might also get all 14 teams to conference tournament with the top 2 getting a double bye. The bottom 4 teams would play each other in an opening round (on campus sites) to eliminate 2 teams. Then seeds 5-12 play in next round to eliminate 4 more teams. Seeds 3 and 4 join in the quarterfinals, and finally seeds 1 and 2 get double byes straight through to the semis. I think the last 4 rounds would be in Frisco or wherever the conference tournament is to be played.

If the same format is done for the women too, having a double bye would be nice for them.

I'd feel a little worse about it if we were in a conference with teams you'd want to see. Like some writer on twitter said it was a good idea, because who wants to see that 2nd Duke-Boston College game? Well, I bet the Boston College fans would have liked to see Duke. Probably less of a concern if we miss Marshall or MTSU

I hope not.

The overall strategy seems to be to jettison the chaff ASAP and push the wheat further. A participation trophy conference championship does the exact opposite. Wasted games against cannon fodder.

If anything, the CUSA tournament should be cut to top 6 with the top 2 getting a bye.

Also holy hell - this is the first smart and forward thinking change that C-USA has made in over a decade, or maybe ever. Smart move.
