There's hope for Italy yet
http://www.france24.com/en/20180603-get-...s-migrants

Quote:The latest came late Friday, just hours after Salvini took his oath of office, with some 158 people, including nine children, landing in Pozzallo after being rescued by a humanitarian boat in an operation coordinated by the Italian coast guard.

Salvini had said after being sworn in that he would ask his ministry's experts "how to reduce the number of arriving migrants and increase the number of expulsions".

"The good times for illegals is over -- get ready to pack your bags," he said Saturday at a rally in Italy's north.

"Countries need to start doing their job and no more smugglers should be docking in Italian ports," he said in a swipe at the NGOs organising rescues at sea, which he has regularly accused of complicity with people traffickers.

Make Italy Great Again!

I suppose it’s possible, but the fact remains: Italy is in a very, VERY deep hole regardless of what they do or don’t do at this point. Fixing the problems will take a lot of hard work over a period of 20-30 years. Yeah, getting out of the EU is probably a good idea, all in all, but even if the EU let them out tomorrow with no strings attached (which isn’t happening), Italy would still find itself behind the 8-ball.

And Italy's president is blocking the winning parties finance minister because he is not "pro-eu".... Things are could get unly if the undemocratic EU trys to thwart an election.

Italians might find an unlikely friend in Trump - who is also not a very good "ally" of the powers that be in the EU (but for very different reasons).

We do have military presence there in the way of an AFB, iirc.

Army has bases there--Camp Darby in Livorno/Pisa area, Camp Ederle near Vicenza.

Navy has an air station at Sigonella, tenant on an Italian air force base.

Military bases won’t stabilize a new (non-EU) currency. Won’t help Italy refinance its debts, either.

Look, I’m hoping Italy can make this work. But getting out of the EU is a long, sticky process. It’s a tough slog even for a wealthy nation with a skilled, capable workforce (like the U.K.). And Italy ain’t the U.K.

Eh, Italy's mess dropped the US 10 year treasury under 3.0%. So, yeah, that's a good thing.
