Regional Scoreboard
Sad to see no thread on the opening round of NCAA regional play for the first time in 24 years (well there was no sports board back in 1995 but you get my drift). Just because Rice isn't playing doesn't mean we can't gripe about teams and conferences getting more respect than they deserved.
Score of the day thus far is Oklahoma 20, Mississippi State 10 in the opening game of the Tallahassee regional. The game took 4:42 to play. My favorite stat of the game is that OU had 20 runs and 22 hits, but no homers (in a park that is a home-run park to begin with).

Watched a couple of innings of that game, including the 7th when OU scored 9 runs to go from down 10-7 to up 16-10. State used 5 pitchers in that inning, one of whom hit the batter, the umpire, and the catcher with the same pitch - never saw that before.

TT 9 - NMSt 2
TAMU (3 seed) 10 - Indiana (2 seed) 3. If UT defeats 4 seed TSU tonight, that sets up an interesting winner's bracket game on Sat.
CSF 6 - Baylor 2

You've got me wondering: when did Owlzone start?
I seem to recall that it crashed in 2002 -- is that right?
By the way, my wife still refers to this board as Owlzone, as in:
"Stop wasting time on Owlzone!"

No love for sammytheowl.com - the board I started briefly I think before Owlzone? I left Rice in 1996 and I want to say I started that site later that year? If that's correct then I'll put in 1997 or possibly 1998 when Owlzone started? Others would know better than me for the dates.

Houston up 4-1 over Purdue in the 6th inning (trying to salvage a forgettable day thus far for AAC)
USM up 1-0 early (they are pitching Sandlin)
Florida Atlantic down 5-3 in the 7th to Jacksonville

Army wins 5-1 at NC State. Talking heads saying this takes the place of TSU over Rice as the biggest upset. A little bit of a smile on my face after having sat through the two bullpen meltdowns against the Wolfpack in our last Supers appearance.

Not sure the announcers are correct. TSU beating Rice and Humber was a huge upset.

I agree. What we were in 2004, a #6 or #7 national seed? And TSU had a worse RPI than Army.

Kirk Bohls, in his column recently, was touting the idea of Pierce bringing the OG on as a pitching consultant...

Don't know if that's true, but wouldn't be surprised. I know Wayne and Pierce are still very close, and Wayne and Tanya are considering moving to Austin.

Stanford and Wright State 3-3 after 11. Would have been avoided but in an early inning with runners on the corners and one out, and leading 3-1, Stanford runner on first headed to second. Pitcher threw to second. Runner on third headed home. Thrown out at home.

Stanford won in 13 innings. Clemson also went extra innings but won in 10. Florida State - surprise, surprise - lost at home to Samford. They now play Mississippi State in an elimination game this morning.

RE: Regional Scoreboard
Southern Miss and Sandlin with an easy win yesterday. They face off against national seed Arkansas in the winners bracket tonight.
FAU blew a 3-0 lead and lost 3-6 yesterday, but came back to trounce Columbia 11-2 in today's loser's bracket.
The big (but deja vu) news-- national seed Florida State is 2&Q in Talahassee, losing last night to Samford, and blowing a 2-0 lead in the 9th inning this afternoon to Mississippi State. After throwing 109 pitches through 8 innings, and sitting out a 2 1/2 hour rain delay, FSU brought back their ace to close things out in the bottom of the 9th....another 28 pitches later, a walk-off, 3-run HR, and the Seminoles once again exit early. BTW, the guys at D1Baseball and Perfect Game all were in shock when the FSU ace returned to the mound...and, yes, Keith Law has already weighed in on the irresponsibility of Coach Martin.

Speaking of our loss to TSU in 2004, I would say FSU losing to Samford was a lot closer to us than NC State losing to Army.

RE: Regional Scoreboard
Wow, Mike Martin might have coached his last game there. He passed Augie Garrido this year for most coaching wins but he still has a reputation for not performing well at all in the postseason. They did make the CWS last year after losing their regional opener but they have just one conference title this decade so it's a tough call for FSU admins. Maybe they'll let him coach one year to get to 2000 wins and retire at age 75?
