Thought SMU fans might be interested...

After what seems like FOREVER with Derek Anderson, it looks like Cam Newton is finally going to get a new backup QB.

As of right now, per Head Coach Ron Rivera, Garrett Gilbert is the #2 guy. He has said we aren't out looking to sign a backup QB because he's on the roster.

Apparently he has been incredibly accurate in practice and OTA's, with very few mistakes.

With Cam's tendency to run and give up his body to get a few extra yards, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Gilbert sees some good snaps this year.

RE: Garrett Gilbert
kyle allen has a little bit to play into this...

kyle had an udfa offer from basically every team. supposedly carolina coaches made it very clear that they believed in him and his potential to maybe one day be a franchise qb...they didnt draft a qb and the only qb they signed in udfa,..with two of the 3 other qbs on the rosterhaving no significant experience, and the other injury prone (cam)...

they made it clear they werent just bringing him in to try out, like a regular udfa but that they believed in him

wasnt really a deep houston connection....
he was one of the 6 players signed from houston and a qb,

not hard to find a connection when it involves a qb from your team, that just left...

Saw Gilbert last yr in preseason and I knew they'd have to move him up eventually. They kept him on the practice squad last season to keep from cutting. He looks impressive throwing the ball.

Congrats to GG. It was easy to see the guy was an underrated asset. Good luck to him.
