Joey's buddies gotta get paid, but they should have given them the boot.

Seems like JB could make a few phone calls and get an ESPN+ deal. Its probably almost a cookie cutter thing for them now. Agree on terms/financials and fill out a few forms. It is sad CAA can't match D2/D3.

Problem is the CAA controls it, which means Joey and pals make the deals. I really do believe JMU could cut better media deals on their own. CAA is like a weight dragging us down on this.

It'll be interesting to see if that sustains a year from now and onward. It helps that you can get it without a TV subscription (I think).

I think it's the proof that ESPN and other networks need to show there is demand for stand alone channel streaming options. ESPN needs to lead the charge there. Comcast, Direct TV and Dish are all probably begging them not to. It'll be the nail in their coffins.

Until Cable subscriptions whither away, ESPN will stick to their current plan. There is simply too much money in cable distribution for them to risk that revenue stream.

ESPN+ lets them build for the future state with alternate programming that doesn’t fit in their linear channels. It also gives them a head start on establishing themselves as the online sports streaming leader, and get the technology well developed and ready to scale.

In short, it’s a hedge for the day cable no longer matters, and all content is streamed.

ESPN+ is clearly going to be a winner in this space. Wish we were onboard with them.

From what I've been able to gather, I sense that the CAA is not with ESPN not due to ESPN not entertaining us, but rather league leadership not being willing to entertain ESPN.

Our lack of ESPN+ coverage is squarely on Joey D from the pieces I've been able to put together.

FCS isn't an excuse. Poor quality of production isn't an excuse (have you seen some of these crap feeds out there on the platform?). It's a lack of desire.

ESPN+ has their price point perfect. At $10 they'd lose a good percentage of the subscriptions come January and then another big chunk in April. At $5 people won't bother cancelling.

We'll have to see how it pans out. A big reason there are so many of these ESPN+ subscribers is because there were already ESPN Insider subscribers. All Insider subscribers were moved over and count as an ESPN+ subscriber at this point. Saying how fast they have subscribers is quite a bit of positive spin if you ask me.

Nothing that ESPN+ is doing is new or risky really. It's just putting content on a server that's distributed and load balanced via AWS. Nothing new, and very little ownership on ESPN's part outside of paying for AWS and the Media Rights. Sadly, also nothing that can't be done for free with a youtube/twitch account and a single upstream of content.

Basically, if cable fails, ESPN is in a ton of trouble, because their technology doesn't set them apart at all, and eventually there is no reason for conferences/universities to "pay" the middle man.

Maybe. It is basically content aggregation, with a slick interface to make it easy to watch what you want on a variety of devices. They are also aggregating on the advertising side.

Is that centralization and ease of use worth their cut? Hard to say, but they do have some network effects with this too.

Millions of people will go to ESPN+ to find and watch their content. That means a school like JMU can be exposed to those viewers/eyeballs who otherwise wouldn't bother to go find our website or CAA.tv app to view the game. And, along with those viewers are nationally aggregated advertising of which JMU would get a slice. Can we do a better job selling our own advertising than ESPN can?

I think ESPN+ will win. Not primarily based on a "technology" perspective, but more a combination of the branding, aggregation/ease of use, and network effects.

Anyone could build a "facebook" type website today, but they win for the same reasons ... network effects are a powerful thing.

You may not realize it, but if this is true, it's exactly why cable companies will never go out of business, and a lot of the discussion turns if that's the case.

I would guess that Comcast in that region doesn’t carry NBCSW, so it sounds like Madizone streaming is your only option.
