Maybe he's just looking for better exposure to get drafted by the NBA.

Can not possibly....he’s a local kid—-probably wanted to get home and my guess will try to earn the right to become part of the team in a year.

Hamilton leaving isn't news ...222 shared that back in March.
Just the "where to" part is.

He didn’t get anyoffers for scholarship. Wisconsin verbal commits says he is a walk-on at Wisconsin. You can type any college name then verbal commits and see their roster and scholarships and walk-ons and transfers

He improved toward the end of the season and got stronger as the season went on. Wasn’t ready for D1 and probably would have been a good redshirt candidate under different circumstances. He’ll have to redshirt even as a walk on so he’ll be able to develop more. He’s a good kid and I wish him the best.

RE: Owen Hamilton Transferring to UW-Madison
What is wrong with NIU's program that we cannot recruit and develop an athlete like this? He seems like a talented kid with a good attitude who is willing to work hard. Monty has been on the job for an extended period of time now. The program has become what it can become at this point under his leadership. As soon as NIU can afford to do so it is time to thank him for his service and to give someone else a chance to succeed.

Few if any athletic dilettantes coasting through honed talent at NIU.

Every. Single. Sport. at NIU sinks or swims through the ability to develop athletes. If a coach cannot develop raw skill into honed talent, then that coach will not have success at NIU.

Hence, NIU men's basketball.

IMHO NIU Bball under Monty has consistently suffered from signing guys that were just not ready (physically not strong enough) to compete in D1 basketball. Yet they were thrown in there. Hence, lack of success, frustration, snowball-- and people leave. Monty HAS to be able to sell these guys on sitting a year and getting ready. If he can't, or won't, how will this change?

Bickchuck, what does Monty have to do with a Wisconsin kid being homesick and going home. How is that Monty’s fault? Also that doesn’t mean Monty can’t develop him it means the kid wanted to go home. He has to sit this year and may never get a scholarship. He isn’t ready for D1 and if he was he would be the starting center at NIU. Whatever talent he does have the NIU coaching staff would’ve gotten it out of him. You can blame Monty for several things but Owen Hamilton leaving isn’t one of them.

i think this is more the state of D-1 basketball. A mid level basketball star is going to want every chance he can get for exposure, something he isn't going to get in the MAC. The one and done rule and programs like Kentucky and Louisville are the main culprits of this scourge.

Owen Hamilton is hardly a mid-level basketball star.

Unfortunately we aren’t deep enough to let someone sit a year. Great points though.

You Can't blame Monty for any one person deciding to leave but you can blame him for the revolving door that our program has become and for failing to build a program that instills pride and a sense of brotherhood among his student athletes.
