2018 NCAA Baseball Regional Thread
FAU...what are y'alls thoughts on Jacksonville? They are prob. the weakest 2 seed in the tourney IMO. Their best weekend wins are vs. #51 WVU, #85 Bradley, and #86 FGCU. On the weekdays they went 0-3 vs FSU, 1-1 vs. USF, and 1-1 vs. UF. I think this is a very winnable game for yall. Nothing against Jacksonville but they don't really have any signature weekend wins. They've got a weekday win vs UF and USF FWIW. Are you guys pitching your ace game 1 or saving him?

For USM...we've got Dallas Baptist. They are a good team but I think we can beat them without having to start Sandlin. We need to start Powers game 1. He'll be good and rested and he did great in the conf. tourney. I think we've got a good chance of winning the Arkansas regional.

I'll be honest, I think both team can win their regional, though that might be me just wearing black and gold sunglasses. Florida has lost 5 of their last 6 and FAU is no slouch. They'll be ready to play and won't be afraid of the Gators. USM will have to rely on starters going the distance, but if our hitters are on, there's no school that wants to play us.

Florida will be a very tough out. They're arguably the most talented team in the country.

That being said, FAU fans should be happy with the 2 and 4 seeds that ended up there.

RE: 2018 NCAA Baseball Regional Thread
USM definitely has a good shot at winning their Regional. Especially with Sandlin. The Niners faced Arkansas up here in a mid-week game and actually knocked them off. Of course we didn't face any of their weekend guys, but we were throwing our mid-week guys too. Their offense couldn't do much against our guys, I don't see them having much success vs Sandlin. As shown in the C-USA Tourney, USM has pretty good pitching depth to make a run.

I don't think FAU has quite enough pitching depth to knock off Florida twice, but I hope they can find a way.

Best of luck to USM and FAU!! Keep that C-USA Baseball flag flying!!

RE: 2018 NCAA Baseball Regional Thread
Coach Mac told me that we'll start Sanderson against Jacksonville tomorrow. I like this call. He pitched extremely well in the conference tournament and that'll possibly save Miednik for Florida. I think our biggest concern is whether Miranda and Pages will play. Miranda injured his hamstring in the opening game of the tournament against FIU and Pages has been out for a few weeks due to hamate surgery. As of now, Mac is hopeful both will play tomorrow.

As for pitching, we've just got to get a few good innings out of our starters and then the bullpen can take over. Besides Miednik and Sanderson, I'd start Nowatnick for a third game. Maybe also Ruff? Coletti has really struggled the past month. Schneider, Peden, et al. have been fantastic in relief.

And, we definitely need our bats to come alive. If we can continue to get some clutch hitting, we have a chance. Both Miranda and Pages are integral to our lineup, but Lambert has also been doing a great job behind and at the plate.

It looks like Jacksonville is starting their ace Gau against us. He'll definitely be tough to hit against. I'm really surprised they're not starting Santana nor Stockton. Hopefully, we find a way to win this game.

Has Southern Miss decided on who is starting tomorrow? How does the match-up look against Dallas Baptist?

Berry announced Sandlin will go tomorrow vs Dallas Baptist. I realize if you don't win your 1st 2 games that you're in the same situation but I like going with Sandlin for game 1. To me it makes it more challenging if you lose that first game knowing that you have to win 4 straight (Saturday, Sunday x2, Monday) to advance. No disrespect to Dallas Baptist but I feel confident in our #2 (Powers) and #3 (Powell) starters it's just a lot more comfortable having Sandlin on the mound. Plus, if a Monday game is needed Sandlin would be a little more rested and could come back for several innings.

That's definitely true. Southern Miss has some great depth of starting pitchers while we have to rely more on our relief pitching. If we still had Marman this season, we might be starting Miednik against Jacksonville – but given both our rosters, I think we made the best decisions to try to advance in the tournament. I won't be able to watch the Eagles play since I'll be at our game, but I'll be keeping track of the score on my phone. Good luck tomorrow!

Writeup from an Arkansas website:

3. Dallas Baptist Patriots

For a team that’s only been playing Division I baseball for 13 years, Dallas Baptist has built itself into quite an impressive power. This year marks the eighth NCAA Tournament appearance for the Patriots since making the jump up to DI in 2005. It’s also the fifth straight appearance for the Patriots.

Dallas Baptist didn’t win the Missouri Valley Conference, falling to Missouri State in the championship. But the Patriots absolutely owned the postseason awards. Devlin Granberg is the Player of the Year. Trevor Conn is the Pitcher of the Year. Kody Funderburk is the Newcomer of the Year. Jimmy Glowenke is the Freshman of the Year. Catcher Matt Duce was a first-team all-conference selection, as were Jameson Hannah and relief pitcher Kragen Kechely. Loaded.

Underestimate Dallas Baptist at your own peril. This is a team that's been to Super Regionals recently, is a top team in a very good baseball league, and they have a Friday Night guy who is lights out.

This is how I feel. We have to start Sandlin in game 1 and he might be available to pitch part of the championship game on Monday if it comes to that.

That's how I would do it. Arkansas is very good in the first two games of a series. But when they start getting into a 3rd, 4th, and 5th starter, they become very vulnerable. You're better off using your Ace Friday, and potentially having him for a few innings on Monday than saving him for Saturday and turning that game into must win.

They will be at their most vulnerable if they see a Monday game. That's when you want to have your Ace available for a few innings at least.

I hope you guys get through it. Baseball is the one thing left the piglets are good at, and it would be fun to see them brought down a peg there as well.

if we can't start our 2 guy that gives us 7 solid almost every time, I'm not sure what else to say against a 3 seed going into Sat. against the 1.....

none of that is a given.....but baseball is about the percentage gain

the fact Arky plays first is a YUGE advantage for us.....

tossing Sandlin in g1 is fk'n stupid unless OR wins.....

I'm kind of surprised Oxford has called it a day already. Obviously they had some rough storms earlier in the day but they appear to be moving south of there now and it's still only 5:30.
