*OFFICIAL* Baseball Coaching Search Thread
Now that 24 hours has passed the end of our season and Karlgaard is done in Indy, I figured we should start discussing the search.
Many of the most popular candidates are not actually in the post-season. In the case of Riser and Deggs, I give them a pass since it’s hard to get an at-large from the Southland. I think Saraloos’ past four years speak for themselves, but it’s worth noting that their staff wasn’t spectacular this year... It was banged up though. One thing I do NOT want is Rice waiting around to see if Schlossnagle takes the Mississippi State job (as Saraloos would be a top candidate at TCU).
A couple other guys I’d like to have us look at:
-Mark Wasikowski at Purdue
-Dan Heefner at DBU

Also another con to Berkman: His team this year was under .500.

Speaking of the Southland, Hallmark's UIW team did not make the postseason, either...as in, finished T-10 in the conference and did not make the SLC tournament. Lost 7 in a row and 8 of 9 to end the season.

Yeah, I think Hallmark is a decent coach and UIW definitely improved in his first year but they ran out of gas at the end.
Not sure he’s the guy for this search... I think we can get someone more proven.

If we’re talking about former Graham assistants, Mike Taylor has done a nice job in Waco the last couple of years !!!

By that standard, Wayne wouldn't make the cut to replace Wayne.

Lance has also coached 2 seasons compared to Wayne’s 40+.
I mean the state championship was impressive but following it up with an under .500 season doesn’t inspire confidence.

Shame on Lance for not getting his coaching career started when he was in diapers.
Look, Lance may or may not be the right guy, but his record in his 2nd year of coaching is not high on the list of determining factors. I'd more concerned with his (or any other candidate's) approach to coaching and recruiting, use of analytics, ability to fundraise, etc.

His record in his 2nd year of coaching is very definitely and absolutely high on the list of determining factors when that happens to be the rank total of years of his coaching. And coaching not even at a Juco level, mind you.
I would be summarily appalled if Lance was selected for the position.
It would be like Team Mercedes putting the keys to the team Formula 1 car in the hands of my 15 year old nephew who just got his learner's permit, tbh. That choice would be grounds for looking at an AD operating under a gross negligence standard.

So if his second year was equal to his first, Lance would be on your list?
From your other comments, it's clear you don't want Lance as the next HC for Rice baseball. That's fine. His experience in total is clearly a factor. His record in one year is not, at least not high on the list of factors, just as Wayne having one losing season in 20+ years at Rice makes him any less of a coach.

Lance also coaches at a TAPPS school...not exactly public 6A ball.

Count me in for the PRO-Berkman crowd.
This program needs a jolt and hiring Lance (and quite possibly Pettitte) would be a splash hire for recruiting. Regardless of what many people in here will say, it’s my opinion.
I’m all for it.

Didn't we just get rid of a football coach who had a similar trajectory before coming here...

If I recall correctly from a post on from the Coaching Caravan thread, Jk responded to a question regarding the coaching search by saying he expected to announce a replacement for The OG within 7 - 14 days of the season ending, whenever that occurred. Given that the Owl Club dinner for $10,000+ donors is scheduled for June 13th, I'd be shocked if the replacement is not announced before then...and even though Bloomgren and his coaching staff will be the featured speakers at the event, I wouldn't be surprised if the new baseball coach is invited to attend and mingle, as well.
No inside information. Just speculating.

Yup, and after Sunday/Monday, there won't be many coaches left coaching so I don't see an issue in having one hired before the 13th.

Ya, this shouldn't be the search thread, but rather the who has already been effectively hired thread. If JK waited until now to initiate the search, that certainly would count as his biggest blunder to date. If anything, the longer it takes to announce a name the better since that likely means our future coach is still engaged in the current season.
