This is one reason why tuition go up at all the colleges and universities. Lawmakers of one party have priorties to a certain few, and not to the people they serve. Education is very important, and it is a shame that we can't invest more money in the schools instead of cutting spending.

It’s because the taxpayers already spend a lot of money for K-12 education. To give more money to higher education that gives degrees in nothing is seen as a waste.
The reason tuition goes much higher than average inflation is because they are drunk on government money and can charge higher rates to cover the demands the faculty and staff.
Take away the slush fund and then you’ll see tuition level off or even decline in both the public and private schools.

Follow the money.

There's decreasing shares of government funding in many states ... and there's declining shares of spending going to faculty.

First sort out where the increasing share of spending is going. That's university administration. They are squeezing it out of students. The government money is rather the student loan guarantees that grease the skids of the student loan system which fuels the fire.

But where does the money come from when the state's budget is so deep in the red they have taken $14 Billion from savings in the past few years? When you are taking money from savings to pay operational expenses, you are on a sinking ship. Alaska can't print money. So they either raise taxes or cut spending or both. If you want more money for the university, who do you take it away from? Law enforcement (Alaska already has a high crime rate)? Roads? Health? Environment?

The governor (who is a career educator- teacher, principal, district superintendent) was elected just last year on a platform of ending the deficits. His proposed cuts this year are only half of the total budget deficit. They will still be in the red. Alaska has a per capita cost of state government twice the national average. Alaska government which floated on a sea of oil in the past has to remake itself. That includes the University of Alaska.

Well, they do have the lowest tax burden in the country by a whole 0.6% compared to the second lowest and about half that of the highest (they come in at 6.5%)

https://247wallst.com/special-report/201...taxes-3/2/

This is despite also having the 10th highest income per capita in the nation. They can increase taxes by 0.5% on income and still have the lowest in the nation. Granted that's not going to close the entire $14B gap, but it'll make a dent by realizing they should probably increase the tax burden a bit.

In case you don't like that source (I honestly don't know what it is), here's Forbes with the same list and numbers: https://www.forbes.com/pictures/emeg45eh...7d2ece2447

We pay taxes, mostly sales taxes, and the lottery to properly fund the schools at all levels. Some political leaders want to divert money from the schools for personal pet projects that the state do not need. Second, giving businesses to pay no taxes to build new plants is also a give aways to big corporations. They then complain about not having enough people with the skills to work on fixing robotics in factories, but no dah, states like Alaska cutting funding to education creates these shortfalls of candidates to hire in these important jobs.

Former USCAA school, Ohio Midwestern University seemed to be closed for good. It was founded as Temple Baptist College in 1972 and joined USCAA in 2009 as Ohio Mid-western College after they moved their campus to Cincinnati and added sports. They were added into Ohio Collegiate Athletic Conference with the likes of University of Cincinnati Clermont College, Clark State Community College. Ohio Christian University, Ohio State University, Marion Campus, Southern State Community College and Valor Christian College.

Marlboro College In Vermont To Merged Into University of Bridgeport

Another Vermont college failed. I think Marlboro dropped sports some years ago.

Marlboro College is struggling but didn't exactly fail. This move has been in the process of taking place for a while and helps the school stay open, unlike Green Mountain College. The school has never had more than about 300 undergrads and never had intercollegiate athletics.

So, how does this force any realignment?

The BOT at CCU hired con-artists who stole the school blind. There was an article from earlier this year on the school, and the reasons for the school in dire financial state. One idea for BOTs at smaller schools to do your research before hiring thieves.

And don't do like Henderson State and contract for financial aid software that no one else uses. Their first year less than 10% of applicants had their financial processed before school started. They then had to change their student balance limit (ie. how much you can owe the school and still be allowed to enroll for the next semester) and ended up with a bundle of students who owed for two semesters but couldn't pay because they didn't get as much aid as hoped for leading to a big deficit that forced them to borrow money from the state to continue operations.

Selma University Could Be Closing

They dropped sports last summer, but they would be the second school to close down in Selma. Concordia, Alabama closed down in 2018. Both are/were HBCUs.

Concordia-Portland is on this list of debt. There are several schools on this list closed after I posted this thread.
