RE: FUTURE FOOTBALL SCHEDULES
Looks like UConn, UVA, and Liberty worked together.
2023 has UConn at home and UVA on the road.

RE: FUTURE FOOTBALL SCHEDULES
I'm guessing one FCS home game on 10-21-23 or 10-28-23.

I like it I guess. I imagine we'll have more games lined up with UConn sooner than later but the details aren't finalized yet.

Yea, probably. That'll make 2023 really fail on the "one marquee home game" a year philosophy Ian talked about trying to do. Being so far out still, I wonder why they settled so quick.

They are counting ODU as the “marquee” game. It does make sense though, last year ODU with horrible weather drew 20,425. Syracuse this year with a new head coach, a top 25 P5 team and beautiful weather drew 21,671. They will sell tickets and that’s what the marquee game is meant to do.

RE: FUTURE FOOTBALL SCHEDULES
I understand Liberty may look at ODU as a marquee game but I don't know that many fans do. I imagine our game with them sold so well due to being our season opener, our first as FBS, and ODU brought plenty of fans being nearby. Most of the tickets would have been bought in advance so the weather wouldn't have been much of a factor.

Going forward, I would classify ODU in a second tier of opponents. They aren't a premier attraction and we don't have much history with them but our programs are on similar levels and we're both Virginia schools. I'd like to play them regularly, not necessarily every year but they should be showing up on the schedules of all our sports.

RE: FUTURE FOOTBALL SCHEDULES
Yea, I'm not sure about ODU either. It may be the most regionally interesting game in 2023, but I think my marquee threshold would be more recognizable names, although not necessarily powerhouses.

2021 gets by with Army. 2022 is probably the most intriguing home schedule we'll see in a decade, with both VT and BYU. 2025 and forward all look to be arranged perfectly, with rotating 2 for 1 p5 games, where we get one of the 1s each year. I'd suspect this is also what Ian means by marquee, at least long term, but it just didn't work out in 2023. There's a lot of open slots in 2024, so that's still up in the air.

RE: FUTURE FOOTBALL SCHEDULES
Regarding attendance, it's hard to estimate the net effect of the rain for ODU. Additionally, I'm pretty sure they did a super cheap ticket option for faculty/staff, 5 dollar range if I remember correctly. Possibly others that weren't as public. Those didn't exist for Syracuse, and the base price went way up. And, although it was clear and sunny, it was uncomfortably hot.

Regardless, I'm starting to think we have a cohort of people that will come to games, those that already do, and we won't be able to exceed that number no matter who we play. Sure, attendance figures may go up because of visiting fans, but we have a pool of fans in the low 20k range to draw from, and that's it. I think that's what Syracuse teaches us. Those that care that we are playing a ranked p5 team, with a former SEC coach that beat Alabama 2 years in a row, coached his team into national contention etc..., are those that would have come even if it was Gill. It doesn't resinate with the rest enough to create new fans, just like I don't really care enough to buy a ticket when LU baseball has a home game against an ACC team.

I also remember a lot of press implying Syracuse was going to be a sell out. Stuff like that is often marketing fluff to create more demand, but I actually think LU believed it this time. They experimented with prices and how to market it, and probably over estimated the impact of the FBS, P5, and Freeze storylines, just like fans may have. It'll be interesting to see how they adapt next year with what they learned, if at all.

I think the bold is the key. I agree that LU has a core group of fans and not many casuals. This is likely due to many things, in particular the controversies that surround LU. Between hiring McCaw followed by Freeze, Falwell's relationship to Trump, the current coup attempt against Falwell, among other things, any one of those acts could turn off a large percentage of casual fans. The only ones left are basically the ones who won't leave for almost any reason.

RE: FUTURE FOOTBALL SCHEDULES
What exactly is the scheduling philosophy stated by McCaw and Freeze?

I guess I’m a bit surprised we can’t get any AAC or MWC games (other than NM). There are some pretty established teams.

I understand playing a majority of ACC games and a smattering of SEC games. I’d like to see the Pac 12 added.

RE: FUTURE FOOTBALL SCHEDULES
What are the Top 3 games you are looking forward to the next three seasons?

2020
Sep 05 - @ Virginia Tech (huge close in-state game)
Sep 19 - @ Western Kentucky (glad to see LU in my home state. Will try to get relatives there)
Oct 24 - Southern Miss (winnable, tradition rich opponent)

2021
Sep 18 - ODU (rival game, always good to beat ODU and set the power order in VA straight)
Nov 13 - @ Ole Miss (any chance to beat an SEC team is great)
Nov 27 - Army (super respected opponent, big draw for a military state)

2022
Oct 22 - BYU (this is one we’ve always wanted)
Nov 05 - @ Arkansas (Hopefully a winnable game over the SEC)
Nov 19 - Virginia Tech (guaranteed standing room only crazy time)

For 2020...
VT
Syracuse
@ Bowling Green (this might just be my first LU game in person!) Hoping to make the trip.

I'd say these:

2020
@VT - Great in-state matchup. Have a feeling that this series could contribute to a potential rivalry between football & basketball. Should be fun!
FIU - Get to host our first Florida FBS team, potentially catch the eye of some South Florida recruits.
@UConn - The beginning of what could be a very interesting rivalry.

2021
@ North Texas - Get to play our first game in Texas since BYU. Need I say more?
@Ole Miss - The meeting of ex's after a nasty break-up always intrigues people. 2nd SEC matchup.
Army - Love that we get to host them at what should be a great military appreciation game.

2022 - cheated on this one. Lots of intrigue this year.
UAB - Might not be the University of Alabama we hope to play one day, but man, they've done something great there since bringing the FB team back.
@FIU - First time playing football in the state of Florida that I'm aware of. Get to show SoFlo what we've got, which will be great for recruiting purposes!
BYU - Evangelicals v Mormons Part Deux
@Arkansas - A potentially winnable SEC matchup
VT - Our first home game against an in-state P5 team. This will likely be a packed stadium, standing-room only.

RE: FUTURE FOOTBALL SCHEDULES
Wish we could rotate with the Academies and Virginia schools every six years, i.e.
2020 vs. Army . . . . . Virginia
2021 @ Navy . . . . . .Va. Tech
2022 vs. Air Force . . .ODU
2023 @ Army . . . . . .Virginia
2024 vs. Navy . . . . . .Va. Tech
2025 @ Air Force . . . ODU
and repeat.

I’d also like each class to be able to play BYU and Notre Dame at least once during their four year stay at Liberty.

Oh, and to play a road game in Florida and Texas each season.
