IDF has F-35s in Combat use
https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/22/politics/...index.html

Have a feeling these will be giving Iran's nuclear program a visit in the night at some point.

Sure is nice of the IDF to be our guinea pigs with the F-35s against Russia's latest SAM systems

Good testing for our bad azz stuff. The F35 isnt our top of the line---buts it is the backbone of our front line fighters.

I thought the F-35 was the latest and greatest... is there something new?

F-22.

In test one f22 destroyed 5 f15s sent to engage it. The f15s never even detected it until they were confirmed kills. One badass plane.

Isn't the F22 mainly an air-to-air fighter?

It can do anything. Its actually older than the F35 as it was in service prior to the first F35. Though they were actually developed at the same time. Just took the F35 longer to get done because it had to meet so many more specific requirements for separate service branches. They had to get all 3 approved before moving forward because the idea was to have all 3 versions share as many interchangeable parts as possible.

As a 5th generation combat aircraft, the F22 is unmatched. So's its price tag---which is why the production run was cut. The theory was the F35 would be almost as good but would be much much cheaper--so we didntneed that many F22's. That hasnt really turned out to be the case. The f35 is a good plane, but not as good as the F22 and its really not all that much cheaper because of cost overuns and changes in purchase volume that caused the unit price to increase to the point that its approaching the F22 cost.

and the f35 was supposed to be able to provide ground support, but it fell way short there, and the a-10 still kicks its ass for ground support.

The real problem is that they needed three different airplanes and they tried to make the F-35 be all three--an air superiority fighter/interceptor, an attack aircraft, and a V/STOL aircraft for the Marines, Royal Navy, and other export sales. And there are so many tradeoffs between the three roles that it is not optimized for any of them. To accommodate the lift fan required for V/STOL operations, the airframe blocks visibility behind, which could be detrimental in air-to-air combat (although as long as their fancy-dancy helmet works--and it doesn't fully yet--the pilot should be okay). And it doesn't have long enough legs or big enough bomb load to be ideal for the attack role. Three different aircraft that shared a lot of commonality would probably have been a better bargain. What we have is kind of the classic, "an elephant is a mouse designed by a committee."

That made me laugh. So true. It was pretty good conceptual idea--but the reality was the specs were so different for each service that it just was never going to work in the way it was envisioned. Its still a good plane--but it could have been better.

One thing the US is going to have to work on is shortening the military product design cycle. Its way too long. 04-cheers

The F-22 is unmatched. Sadly the production run was cut short. Hopefully more will be ordered in time. The F-16 started its service in the 70s and they were still making new ones even today.

And just becuase it's such an awesome plane to look at... here's a shot of mine from an Air Show last year.

We went to the SC Air Guard show at McEntire JNG Base last year and they had a F-22 doing demonstrations. Absolutely awesome aircraft,

Nice shot. I had a couple fly over at low level about 6 months ago. Surreal. We should have a couple of these bad boys take a low pass over anybody that pisses us off. It would get their mind right in about 5 seconds.

Get one as in an F-22? Join the Air Force. 03-wink
As far as the image, Yes that's mine. I was prior USAF, so occasionally when there is a show in my area I pull a few strings and get on-base access during practice flights... so I dont have to fight with anyone else for position, and sometimes the pilots will have more fun since its not crucial that they preform their exact routine. It's practice afterall. 03-razz And a on two occasions Ive gotten to do aerial shots from a chopper on flybys. But that's been official work, and they own the Copyright to those images, so I can't do anything with those.
So are you asking for a print? If so, send me a PM and we'll figure it out.

I was prior USAF, so occasionally when there is a show in my area I pull a few strings and get on-base access during practice flights... so I dont have to fight with anyone else for position, and sometimes the pilots will have more fun since its not crucial that they preform their exact routine. It's practice afterall. And a on two occasions Ive gotten to do aerial shots from a chopper on flybys. But that's been official work, and they own the Copyright to those images, so I can't do anything with those.
So are you asking for a print? If so, send me a PM and we'll figure it out.

Another from that Air Show
