Tennis is declining in popularity in the United States at a time when other sports like soccer are growing. The talent pool is shrinking. Part of the problem is that the game is more boring than it used to be.

Actually I don't think that's it. There are more girls playing HS tennis today than ever before. (Data here.) Participation numbers have never seen a sustained decline to my knowledge. I think the difference is that the game has grown even faster overseas, and that expanded talent pool has become far more accessible to American college coaches via the internet. Combine those developments with the advent of standardized rankings that facilitate comparisons of players from different countries -- and the NCAA rule (Bylaw 12.1.2.4.2) that basically allows tennis and only tennis players to win prize money (up to $10K!) without forfeiting their amateur status -- and the result is a tsunami of (very good) foreign players.
