Update on Jon Duplantier
• No. 68 overall prospect Jon Duplantier (D-backs' No. 1) completed a season-high six innings of two-hit ball in his first scoreless start of the season as Double-A Jackson beat Pensacola, 5-0, in a rain-shortened game. He induced seven ground-ball outs and struck out six in the outing, throwing 51 of his 73 pitches for strikes. The 23-year-old righty has pitched to a 2.37 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings (six starts) this season after getting a late start due to a hamstring injury.

RE: Update on Jon Duplantier
The race to see who first gets to the majors. Jordan Stephens and John Simms are both doing well in AAA, and Dane Meyers is already pitching well at AA.

RE: Update on Jon Duplantier
For an over-used, shredded former Rice baseball team arm, he sure is doing well.

Nope. Duplantier (Arizona), Stephens (White Sox), Myers (Detroit), Otto (Yankees), Duffy (Twins), Lamond (Miami), Simms (???)

RE: Update on Jon Duplantier
Myers is actually still only in A ball but yes, he’s pitching well and is barely 22 so he’s got time.

RE: Update on Jon Duplantier
The Astros haven't had a significant Rice Owl in the system since they released Kevin McCanna after the 2016 season (he made it to High-A Lancaster). He's currently organizational depth on Arizona's high-A affiliate.

Here's an article published June 5, 2018:

Quote:Top pitching prospect Jon Duplantier is out with right biceps tendinitis, but the organization doesn’t seem to believe the injury is overly concerning.

General Manager Mike Hazen said Duplantier complained that his pitches didn’t have their typical velocity during a recent start with Double-A Jackson, prompting the organization to get him examined.

“He didn’t feel like it was right,” Hazen said. “So, obviously, we made sure we checked it out, did the MRI.”

Hazen said the images showed inflammation but nothing structurally concerning. Duplantier is on anti-inflammatories.

“He’ll be shut down for a short little bit,” Hazen said. “We’ll get him back throwing against once it’s calmed down.”

Duplantier has a history of arm issues. He missed most of his sophomore year at Rice due to shoulder problems, and he threw only one inning in the minors in the summer after he was drafted due to an elbow issue.

He stayed healthy last season and posted some of the best numbers of any pitcher in the minor leagues, logging a 1.39 ERA in 136 innings split between Low-A Kane County and High-A Visalia.

He carried that success into this season, in which he had a 2.52 ERA in seven starts with Jackson. His season started about two weeks late because of a hamstring injury.

Hazen said Duplantier’s injury history doesn’t change the way the team is handling this latest setback.

“I think we’ll take it as the medical team tells us to,” Hazen said. “I think once he’s pain-free and good to go, we’ll get him back going.”

Seems he was battling a biceps tendinitis injury and was shut down then, last pitching on May 27, 2018 At the time he was 3-1 and had a 2.52 ERA over 35.2 innings with the Double-A Jackson Generals. Started the season with a right hamstring injury late in spring training. According to MLB.com, Duplantier is the top prospect in Arizona's farm system and the No. 60 prospect in all of baseball. His name recently surfaced in the Manny Machado talks the Diamondbacks were having with the Orioles. (Machado now appears to be going to the Dodgers instead.)

quote:

Duplantier (biceps) tossed five perfect innings and struck out three Monday in Double-A Jackson's 2-1 loss to Tennessee.

Making his first start in the Southern League since May 27 after a prolonged absence due to biceps tendinitis, Duplantier looked fully healthy while showcasing the dominant form he had displayed prior to landing on the 7-day disabled list. Duplantier's injury may have prevented Arizona from making a bigger splash at the trade deadline, but keeping its top pitching prospect in the organization certainly wasn't the worst outcome. Duplantier will likely have his innings and pitch counts monitored carefully as the minor-league season winds down, but he'll likely continue to post sterling results nearly every time he takes the mound. Over 40.2 innings at Double-A this season, Duplantier has submitted a 2.21 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 44:11 K:BB.
