You can't make the same call to Graf every time the city or the school needs money. Where is International Paper's money? Servicemaster? Any of their spinoff companies? Autozone? The Redbirds got some of their money, give the city some more. Raymond James? The city is headquarters for several fortune 500 companies and several more have large operations here. You can't call Graf when you need a check. It is time for others to step up and help out.
It's not a donation, it is advertising. I would be surprised if FedEx doesn't want the advertising rights to a stadium in their own backyard.
FedEx brands plenty of sporting events and venues because they get a return on investment. There's no big difference between other events, venues and the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
Should the city sell the naming rights could it eventally cost us the Liberty Bowl bowl game? May or may not be worth it.
The same argument could be used for Servicemaster, Terminix, Merry Maid, Truegreen, Thomas and Betts, IP, First Tennessee and on and on. Those companies could benefit from the advertising. Never said it was a donation but for Fedex to be counted on for most everything while other companies sit on the sidelines is wrong. Next time someone has the chance to see Fred or Graf, ask them how it makes their blood pressure rise when they see area based companies filling up a UPS truck with packages the Memphis companies are shipping out. While they can't control how someone ships them a package, they certainly have a choice on how they ship it and to use the competition in Memphis is crazy. Years ago a very large Memphis based auto parts retailer was the LARGEST shipper the competition had in their entire network. Once it was pointed out during a shareholder meeting that the founder of that very auto parts retailer was on the Fedex board of directors, the business then shifted to Fedex. Fedex and Fred has done plenty and will continue to do so, such as the new golf tournament next year. You just can't call 1800GOFEDEX every time the city or the school needs money. Let those UPS trucks drive around empty all day with no freight that area shippers gave them and you might see a bigger commitment. You just never know.
Yeah, I forgot about T&B and First Tenn. You've also got Smith&Nephew. Those three need to step-up along with ServiceMaster (and the spinoffs). But the biggest one sitting on the sidelines is IP. Employees and local leaders need to put the pressure on them to get involved. I know they do some things with St. Jude. But the city needs them to be a bigger presence in some quality of life things around here.

Raymond James Stadium is in Tampa.
AutoZone Park.
AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
Ever heard of a place named Fedex Forum
How bout Fedex Field at the south campus.
How bout Fedex St Jude Classic
The ones you quoted do have Marketing benefits...
The Liberty bowl marketing return would be minimal and would be considered more of a donation than an investment.
I know Fedex was gonna spend big time when we thought we were gonna get in the new conference. Graf said the company would recoup their money with marketing. It is a large geographical conference. Having another local building with Fedex on it would not have the same return on investment.

How would the city selling naming rights to LBMS eventually cost the city the bowl game?

That's a whole different discussion. I've always wondered what that return actually is on some of these marketing costs across the board.
All I'm saying is that if companies are willing to buy naming rights for HS football stadiums and minor league baseball stadiums...then somebody out there would be willing to pay something for naming rights to LBMS.
Hell, the Landers Center and BankPlus Amphitheatre at Snowden Grove both sold naming rights.

UPS Stadium? In Memphis? Guess if FedEx didn't want naming rights no one would twist their arm.

FedX has been a blessing to the city and school. Why not just give FedX the naming rights as a thank you (assuming they would be interested).

RE: Stadium naming rights
The university's lease for use of LBMS specifically provides that the City retains naming rights. The current lease expires after the 2021 season. It also contains the SHC dates thru 2022. It appears that the SHC will always be the 2nd Saturday in September.

Let's see, if we built it 200 million dollar on campus what would our yearly note be?
