FWIW, I have just recently ordered a new NIU flag for my house and put a nice NIU sticker on my boat. I still have Huskie pride but damn I am tired of all this mediocrity.

In the Learfield Cup we are 160 out of 261 Division One programs but only better than 20 other FBS athletic departments. We're just behind Appalachian State, and just in front of WMU.

Maybe it's just my impression, but there seems to be an air of complacency in Athletics to the overall bland mediocrity. Maybe it's just NIU and we can't attract decent athletes, but I really don't believe that. It just seems like many of NIU's teams are mediocre and have been that way for quite some time. And the Reese/Jacoby standings sort of confirm that.

Suck in FB, win National Championships in Water Polo/Volleyball and see how that affects the Athletic Dept/school image/alumni donations.

Being good at football and sucking everything else is no way to run a program either.

Our record in Men's sports is horrible.
Since returning to the MAC over 20 years now, outside of football (soccer 1 yr) has any sport come close to competing for a MAC title??
That blows me away.

Alabama's programs are SEC mediocre other than FB. They bring in $174 million in athletic revenue.

I was speaking specifically about NIU.

Besides I'm not sure Alabama and NIU are comparable in your analysis. And for 2017-2018 Alabama is 5th in the SEC and 20th overall in Learfield Cups standings

+1. EMU sits atop these standings and their athletic department is close to folding. In college it's about being good at football. If you can't be good at football then be good at basketball. If you're not good at either then don't bother. No one cares.

I'm too lazy to look all of them up, but Alabama's men's and women's golf teams both just lost in the national championship matches. Alabama women were ranked #1.

By the way, both the men's and women's golf teams at Kent State advanced to the nationals (again) this year.

Well we did wing the Jacoby trophy last year, for the first time. It's not like we have this great history, in our time in the MAC, of dominating the Olympic sports, which are mainly individual sports with a team element added.

There are 43 threads on the first page of this forum. 31 are football topics, 3 basketball, 1 softball, 8 Non-sport related. And yes, I only care about football. As this board suggests, that's the majority opinion. If you're into college lacrosse or swimming, it's probably because you either did the sport yourself or have a son or daughter who participates. That's great. And we all went NIU athletics to succeed in any sport, but there's just no demand. Feel free to start threads in here about baseball or wrestling or whatever you're into. I certainly won't criticize them but I won't read them either.

Close to folding was hyperbole. Yes. They had to cancel 4 programs and had serious pressure from within to drop football to FCS, but not really close to folding.

All of the above in a thread regarding the Reese and Jacoby standings which are based on all conference sports.
