Judging by the radar, it doesn't appear that there's a cell within 10 miles of Biloxi at the moment.

RE: LaTech/Biloxi Game 1 (Wednesday)
I am not a weather guy, so let me ask-is it silly to try and play this baseball tournament in late May/early June in Biloxi? It looks like on average in May and June you get about 11 inches of rain there; that seems like a lot. Is that just what to expect in the gulf area (the conference foot-print) in those months? Could you send the Astros on the road for a week and play it in Minute Maid, where you can close the roof? The ACC played their tournament in Fenway a few years back.

Game just resumed at 1:47pm. FIU on their 3rd pitcher; this time one of their middle relievers. And he's immediately in trouble, walking back-to-back batters with one out (B5). And the FIU coach has seen enough, and promptly inserts his #4 starter (Sunday starter through mid-season).

And FAU capitalizes, taking a 2-1 lead heading to top of the sixth inning.

FAU trying not to burn another starter (only their ace has pitched so far), but they go with mediocre middle reliever as their 3rd pitcher, and he's greeted by a game-tying solo HR.

FIU ties it up in the T6. Those are some ugly black uniforms!

FAU pitcher is no challenge for FIU hitters. Given up hits to the first three batters

(05-23-2018 01:28 PM)waltgreenberg Wrote:  At this rate, we can pretty much kiss the automatic bid goodbye, regardless to how well we play over the next two games. At this point, there's no way they're going to get all 4 games in today, and the weather gets considerably worse (80% chance of steady rain) on Friday and Saturday. Consequently, if they can't complete all the games, the CUSA autobid goes to the highest remaining seed....and as the #7 seed, that's not going to be us even if we go 2-0 or 3-0.

Given the week-long Biloxi forecast, which was evident by last weekend, the tournament should have been moved up one day, with no rain in the forecast for Tuesday, and only sporadic thunderstorms scheduled for today and tomorrow.

Here's the conference policy...

http://www.sunherald.com/sports/college/...43784.html

To wit:
"If it is impossible to complete the (tournament), the Commissioner is authorized to declare the tournament champion and recipient of the Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Baseball (Tournament). If the (tournament) is canceled prior to the final game, no champion will be declared and the recipient of the automatic bid shall be the highest remaining seed. If only the championship game is canceled, co-champions will be awarded and the automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Baseball (Tournament) will go to the highest remaining seed."

So evidently, the commissioner has discretion, in the Henry Ford sense*, to declare the auto-bid winner.

*I.e., "A customer can have any color he wants so long as it's black."

FAU escapes with no further damage with the last out coming with the fielder at the wall

FIU squandering opportunity after opportunity with base running blunders and non-clutch hitting. Score is tied 3-3 heading to the B7, but FIU has 11 hits (including HR, 3 doubles), 3 BBs, 1 HBP, 2 SBs, 1 WP, 1 error...and just 3 runs. Sound like anyone we know?

Very cool!
Nice write-up here as well:
http://www.riceowls.com/sports/m-basebl/...18aab.html

Two other tidbits I gleaned from the press release:
- It looks like Southern Miss and FAU lead the selections overall.
- Evidently the title sponsor of this year's CUSA tournament is a bank called The First, A National Banking Association. Seriously, the event is "The First, A National Banking Association C-USA Championship", which really sounds weird. It will be interesting to hear that on the radio.

I knew that banks which are federally chartered must either put "National" somewhere in the name (hence the plethora of names like "XYZ National Bank") or put "N.A." at the end of their name. But I don't think I've ever seen a bank spell out the abbreviation like that.
State law also governs naming conventions to some extent, giving us weird names like First Third Bank in Ohio. Not sure whether that has anything to do with it though.

Their website is "thefirstbank dot com". You'd expect the first bank to have been created before 1996, and I'm surprised thefirstbank dot com wasn't already claimed by then.

FAU goes up by 3 on a bases loaded single to the right field corner. It would have been at least a Double or Triple but The batter pulled his hamstring On his way to first

FAU right fielder David Miranda was the player injured. He had two hits today. From the looks of when he grabbed his leg he may miss the rest of the playoffs.

Game over. FAU wins. We should start play around 4:30 CDT, assuming 45 minutes between games.
