Re: The baseball feild situation.

The City of Huntington and Marshall are in Talks to acquire the Flint Property. This has came to the attention of the ACF group who wanted a crazy amount for their property. Apparently they are now ready to talk more reasonable prices for the property.

If we are talking ROI, our women’s B’ball team has the 3rd highest appropriation for our AD and year in and year out is the least competitive program we have. It’s the worst ROI we have. I would drop women’s b’ball in a heartbeat if the league didn’t require it.

We’ve had two really terrible years that followed a WNIT bid (CUSA semifinals, beat WKU in tournament, and a WBI birth the previous year.

It certainly needs to improve in a hurry. Injuries also hurt them last year. At one point, the pregame pump up video showed 9 game clips in it. 7 of the players featured in those clips (a couple of repeats of the same player) were not able to play.

No excuse because they weren’t where they needed to be with them. But they really fell off without them.

Marshall’s girls don’t even look like most of the rest of the league. Our girls are tiny in comparison, both in height and bulk. Two of the three lead guards weren’t strong enough to throw a cross court pass last year and I’m not even exaggerating.

I would like to know the same thing to be honest. Thats not an easy 2 hour drive either. Thats through the mountains and like you said the tolls on top of it.

Nope. Should have saw how Marshall lost to Virginia Tech. Herd had the strikeout for the final out on a swing and miss in the dirt with the lead in the 9th. Catcher blocked it perfectly, rounded the ball, threw to first and it skipped off the glove, allowing game to continue. The throw wasn’t even high. VT then strung together several hits to win it.

That was the ugliest for Marshall. This? Nothing out of the ordinary.

Its college baseball. Might as well be women's diving in Huntington, and in most places I suppose. I could not care less if they lost eveey game to be honest, and if they won every game and won a national title, id say "how about that, go herd" amd nevee think about it again.

Thanks for caring so much you had to make sure everyone was aware of your lack of caring.

You really showed us.

Just what everyone else feels but is afraid to say for some reason. But they do say it. Its why we have 50 fans at women's basketball games, 20 fans at baseball games, etc. Its not worth fretting over.

If you are a good player, why come to play in Huntington where you have to practice indoors and play the first few months of the season on the road? Even if we built a great stadium I don't think we would ever be good except a rare occurrence where we luck into a pitcher or two who blossoms late.

Just curious I haven't been up that way very often but down here in the south most kids play baseball and then other sports. We do have great weather and a wealth of talent (some leagues start as young as 3). What is it like up there? I lived in Ohio for a while and while the Reds where big there didn't seem to be the emphasis on youth baseball, I'd say soccer and basketball were pretty big there. Field hockey may have even been equal to the baseball I saw there on an organizational level. Can you give me an idea, it's hard for some of us from the south to not realize baseball isn't always the first sport a kid walks into.

Football and basketball are the biggest sports in our area by far. After that for male sports I would say soccer/wrestling are 3/4 (not sure which is 3rd) then I would say track/baseball are 4/5 (not sure which is 4.)

You have to remember that November-beginning of April the weather is not suitable to be outside playing baseball. There are days here and there at the beginning and end of those times, but we could also have 25 degrees and snow at any point during that time. We have even had snow in April before.

In Huntington we don't necessarily have straight winter that entire time and we don't always get a lot of snow. But crappy weather and snow is common during those months.

As someone who was in Huntington and Barboursville regularly during the Pruett era, MU should be too proud to continue to allow baseball to be such a non-concern.

Because screw you, that's why.

Just a guess, but the Power had a home series this weekend and the state track and field meet was also occurring. Charleston was booked. No stadium. No field. No parking. No security.

Unfortunately those two post season years were first we’ve had since the Sarah Evans years, I think. Injuries happen but we aren’t competitive and doubt we will be moving forward. Just a Title IX money pit.

Don't we have a field on Rt 2 as a backup in that situation? Or did they quit using that altogether?

I think we have decent little league baseball, with a few leagues around the state being exceptional relative to the limited size of the talent pool. We are an aging, low population state. As a state we still produce a fair number of good players, but those good players head south to college if WVU can't nab them to play Big 12 ball.

As someone mentioned, February through April pretty much suck weather wise in Huntington. It could be 60-70 one day and then have freezing rain for the next week. It's not unusual to get snow on Easter. There is some fall league ball, but that's relatively new to the area. Basically kids grow up playing ball 3 months a year until they get to travel ball. By then they are just developmentally behind soutern and western kids.

If you think about it, the reason you get so many basketball greats from Indiana, Michigan, etc. is because you can be in a gym in any weather. WV is about the same, gym rat kids instead of diamond kids.

Pretty much the opposite down here. my son umpires high school and the youth select tournaments. Other than december with the holidays he can find a tourney to call almost any weekend.

There was a little league up around Fairmont WV (Marion Co, home of Mary Lou Retton and Nick Sabin) a few years back that fell one game short of making it to Williamsport and the Little League World Series.

You do see more DI athletes come out of WV that play football and basketball rather than play baseball. The state of WV has strict rules about practice times and hours practiced. It hinders most players but it does keep those athletes playing all 3 sports and usually running track instead of specializing in one sport like you see a lot f kids in GA, FL and Texas do.

There is a major misconception on specializing in sports at the youth levels. Virtually all Ohio State football recruits, for example, played multiple sports. That’s the norm among the big time schools.
