The detailed plans haven’t been released yet but my guess is yes, the track will stay. It was just replaced two or three years ago and there’s no place else on campus suitable to accommodate a relocation. Also since this won’t be UH’s permanent football facility there’s less of an issue with having a track between the field and the stands.

I do expect the new stands to displace the sand volleyball courts next to the swimming and diving complex. Also I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to wedge in some end zone seating that spans over the track and connects directly to the parking structure.

Thanks even though I hate tracks around football fields it likely makes the most sense for a three year stop-gap solution. The sand V-Ball courts are definitely gone. That is super cheap to move.

Taking in a football game in Hawaii is one of my bucket list things for CFB. I'm also adding SDSU after they get their new stadium done.

Same. I had been planning for years to do the final UH game at Aloha Stadium. Really wanted to sit all the way at the top in Aloha and go around the stadium on those suspended walkways that look like they’re from Fear Factor.

JSU, approved the moving forward of a possible stadium addition at yesterdays BOT meeting. At this point only a few renderings are out but we will see what the next phase means.

Also adding the establishment of a Doctorate of Education.

Would expect lots to change from the renderings if the project gets final approval. Rumor around campus is the university is out of available dorm space and needing added capacity. I have no idea if true or not.

It seems that they're considering applying for an MLS team.

I haven't read about anyone with $250-300M ready to pony up that money specifically for San Diego, especially when SDSU controls the stadium and stadium site revenues.

I believe the group that was in Sacramento may be trying to bring a club to San Diego now. Wicker, SDSU's AD, has said any MLS club willing to share in the stadium exp would have access to revenues. Doesn't mean it will happen or will be easy, but as a stop gap until a team built their own facility it may just work. Appetite in the region for soccer is pretty strong.

I wonder why they didn't just go for the 41k capacity from the get go. SDSU seems to hit that mark in attendance at least a few times per season, and it seems easier than putting up/taking down bleachers

We've spent 3 decades with more seats than needed, by a lot. They're trying to create scarcity and a sold out feel for most games. Since stadium expansion was part of the original concept and planning it should make it easier to do so when ticket sales demands it...that or an invite to a better conference.

Feels like over five years since it was first announced(thanks, covid), but groundbreaking for NDSU's $37M indoor football practice facility will finally begin later this summer. An overhaul of our outdoor track facility is also coming up this summer or next. Nothing earthshattering compared to the existing facility, but the track surface is approaching 25 years old and needs replacing. Now if anyone happens to have $300M-$500M or so of loose change in their sofa, we wouldn't mind a bigger indoor football stadium...

(NDSU has had an inflatable bubble for the past eight years or so, but it was only about 60 yards long and it was reaching the end of its useful life. Winters up here are tough on things.)

UCO Wantland Stadium Football Upgrades


UCO is spending money before the pandemic. From what I read, they already have a 12,000 seat from 10,000. They have drawings for a 20,000 seat stadium be done by 2030. Why do D2 schools want to build an FBS size stadium unless they are eyeing to join D1 in the future?

Wantland Stadium seats 10,000. Nowhere in that link do they say anything about expanding to 12,000 or 20,000 by 2030. Nothing in that article is about future upgrades. UCO could have a 100,000 seat stadium but they will never get to D1 without adding another men's sport first.

This 9K capacity retrofit is for 2021. UH’s AD has talked about further expanding capacity to 15K for 2022 and 2023. Hopefully the new 35K stadium at the current Aloha Stadium site will be ready by 2024.

This little tidbit is in this morning’s Honolulu newspaper regarding UH’s temporary home at Ching Field:

“UH officials hope to receive zoning approval to expand seating capacity to 15,000 next year.”

Zoning approval would need to be granted by Honolulu’s city government, and Honolulu’s mayor Rick Blangiardi is a UH graduate who played football and is in the UH sports hall of fame.
