Looks like a very nice facility for ODU. I liked the old clamshell stadium, but this definitely looks a lot more legit for an FBS program, not to mention a huge upgrade for amenities.

Thanks. Agree with all of that. I really liked the old school clamshell look. But amenities, sight lines, and limited real estate dictate what we got. I'm stoked on it tho. Huge improvements.

How much for new arena?

Fifty one million 4200 seats uses mass timber CLT in the construction .
Nice premium banquet area 12 by 36 center hung video scoreboard.
I think it is a smart design WSU averaged 2800 last year .
Idaho has had attendance around two thousand recently last year much worse. It will pack out every other year for the WSU game. Montana game is usually a good crowd. Boise St refuses to play in Moscow that was a well attended game.
Interesting as that kind of money would fix the football situa for the foreseeable future.

You mean expand the dome I guess?
There was a plan for about twenty two thousand seats for twenty seven million. No conference no rivals like UTEP and New Mexico like NMSU has so no point.
BSU refuses to play in Moscow and Montana sells out already in FCS.
If Both were FBS and on the schedule like NMSU's rivals Idaho would be FBS independent.
The arena should be a big boost to the A. D. getting basketball out of the dome/Memorial Gym.
The dome for basketball and football idea has passed.
UNI built an arena attached to there dome along with USD and now Idaho.
NAU is planning a 2500 seat arena.
Idaho St is planning to build a three thousand seat arena.
None of the smaller domes have end zone seating like Syracuse.
Always thought it could be done well with low twenties dome with basketball set up in end zone like Syracuse only tighter.
CCU is almost done with their stadium expansion to 20700 looks pretty good . I ride by it all the time kinda cool watching it get built.

I think Wyoming would love more FBS schools close by. Montana, Montana State, Idaho, Idaho State and Northern Colorado could help their woes.

South Dakota starts dome renovation.
Twenty six million one year of reduced capacity to five thousand .
When done 9500 seats new lockers weight room nice renovation.
The sixteen thousand seats that have been mentioned in the past seem impossible now.
I did read one end of the dome can be opened up and end zone seating added for 13-14 thousand seats.
Does not look like USD is ever planning on FBS in the future.

I wish Idaho & Boise State would renew their rivalry again. Good for both sides in basketball & a possible FCS game for Boise State & FBS buygame $$$ for Idaho.

Will there be curtains or tarps at Las Vegas Stadium to keep UNLV's capacity down and less empty seats?

I don't see ISU going FBS but is it possible ?
Their stadium has twelve thousand chair back seats all sideline.
The roof leaks and they are hoping to build a new basketball arena.
Their second home for basketball Reed Gym seats three thousand and is adequate short term.
Remove the leaking roof build end zone seating Montana has thirteen thousand sideline seats.
They have 14k students CCU 10k and CCU has had two 15k games so far in FBS. No it will not happen but if the right people made it a priority and a conference like the MAC or SBC existed out West they could.
I know their budget is low but ticket sales are probably even with CCU and some other lower FBS schools.

The University of Kansas is embarking on a 20,000 seat stadium upgrade costing $315,000,000 and have a world-class Coach that within a year or 2 will turn KU Football around. If the drooling Idiots at Manhattan can do it with one good Coach, so can K.U.

When I consider how long it took South Dakota Statue to build a much simpler (still a very nice) stadium, they must be working 20 hour days at ODU. SDSU started in summer of 2014 and finished Sept. 1, 2016 (2+ years working around the football seasons of 2014 and 2015).

Bit-9 and all, S.B. Ballard Stadium looked today (6-12-2019) looks great!!!
Just make sure the folks over at JMU do not see this, as the fact their administration decline the offer to join you in the move to CUSA. Some will go nuts and others will tell you FCS/CAA is better.

They're not worried. The AAC will be calling them any day now.

They're working around the clock. But they saved a lot of time by using a lot of precast materials, doing some site prep last off-season (running new utilities) and installing the new light poles during last season.

ODU's stadium looks great. Looks a lot bigger than a 22K stadium.

Get rid of the ugly end zone bleachers though and replace with permanent seating tied into the new stadium.

That'll be next phase. At least a few years away. Word is I think that the next step will be adding suites to the sidelines underneath the press box as that's a revenue generator. And addition of a third deck to either side of the press box. They're considering a combination of seating and a "party deck" on the North endzone but much to the chagrin of many on our board that's on the back burner for now. We agree that it's an eyesore.

I guess I am going to have to fire my helicopter up and film CCU's stadium almost done.

It seems odd to me CCU and ODU jumped right on expanding their stadiums.
While Charlotte and U Mass bigger school have not.
Twenty thousand is kinda the new minimum required while fifteen thousand is official.

I can answer that.

When we moved up to FBS, our former AD (plus his team and probably some consultants) believed Gillette would take the place as our primary venue. McGuirk was to be designated as a secondary venue. Its planned primary use was as a practice facility and those weeknight MAC games. Therefore, capacity wasn't really an issue.

Quote:Once the training facility and press box are completed we anticipate we will play at least one game per year on campus.
https://web.archive.org/web/201211130016...i-stadium/

Quote:The more success we have in Foxborough, ironically, the less chance there would be of returning to McGuirk...

The MAC has a tradition of playing late-season, midweek games (for TV). I can see possibly moving that type of game on campus, so that people don't have to make the longer trip in the middle of the week.
https://www.masslive.com/sports/2011/04/..._on_c.html

Since then our situation has changed a bit.
  • UMass hasn't performed on-field as anticipated and as such the attendance has been low enough where Gillette isn't really required.
  • We're no longer in the MAC, so the stadium being built to fit a MAC-specific weeknight requirement doesn't make as much sense anymore.
  • And finally, with Bamford being hired in 2015 there was a change in philosophy.
Quote:College football is meant to be played on campus, and that’s where we want to keep it, at least predominantly
    https://www.bostonherald.com/2017/08/23/...dependent/
Bamford has also utilized UMass' status as an independent to a scheduling advantage. If we were still in the MAC we'd probably be at Gillette most of the time. With Gillette being the primary option I'm nearly positive that P5s, BYU, etc. wouldn't agree to play us at home in McGuirk.

The other thing is economics. The cost of construction in this part of the country is absolutely insane. Maybe in South Carolina you can "build it and they will come"... but here you really need to demonstrate a need to expand. For now comfort and ammenities upgrades are the only things that make sense. Especially since McGuirk already exceeds the 15k minimum, McGuirk was designed for temporary expansion into the low 20ks, and we can always use Gillette as a relief valve.

Our Chancellor and previous AD were football idiots. Plus, according to himself, our Chancellor has been dead and buried since 2012 ("I'll be dead and buried before we are FBS"). He also gave away a medical school in Charlotte to Wake Forest while making himself look like a pure cuck in the process.
